While the original PlayStation 2 version of Fatal Frame 2 only has a single ending, every version of the game since had added at least one ending, with later versions then changing the requirements to obtain previous endings in order to make room for their own. While the remake doesn’t include the new endings introduced in the Wii version of the game, all the endings from the PS2 and Xbox versions are included in addition to two entirelt new endings. Even with the new Chapter Select feature, getting every ending in this game will require multiple playthroughs where the player must complete specific quests. If you are curious about how many endings are in the game and how to obtain them, then please read this guide for all ending in Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly
Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly – All Ending Requirements
There are five different endings to obtain in Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly. While the player will only be able to obtain one of them on a first playthrough, in future playthroughs you can equip specific charms that will change your ending if they’re worn to the final boss room.
| Ending | Requirements |
|---|---|
| Crimson Butterfly | Default Ending |
| The Promise | Enter the Ritual Hall in the Deep Path with Yae’s Sparkling Spirit Stone equipped |
| The Abyss | Enter the Ritual Hall in the Deep Path with The Kusabi’s Sparkling Spirit Stone equipped |
| Sprouting Wings | Enter the Ritual Hall in the Deep Path with Sae’s Sparkling Spirit Stone and Mayu’s Sparkling Spirit Stone equipped |
| The Remaining Sun | Play the game on Nightmare Mode and enter the Ritual Hall in the Deep Path with Mio’s Sparkling Spirit Stone equipped |
Below I shall detail each ending and how to get the Sparkling Spirit Stone that you need to equip for each one.
Ending 1: Crimson Butterfly

Crimson Butterfly is the only ending that the player can obtain on a first playthrough, and is the ending that Fatal Frame 3 would later deem to the canonical one. Just play the game however you wish and you’ll get this ending. The only important thing to note is that after you save clear data with this ending obtained you’ll start your next playthrough with two new items in your inventory: Yae’s shattered spriit stone and the Kusabi’s shattered spirit stone.
Ending 2: The Promise

The Promise ending, which originally debuted in the Xbox version of Fatal Frame 2, makes a return in this version of the game. However, the requirements to unlock this ending have been changed in this version. In order to get this ending the player must complete the following tasks
- Complete Yae Kurosawa’s Side Story
- Defeat the Kusabi in the Ritual Room while having the Yae’s Sparkling Spirit Stone charm equipped.
Yae Kurosawa’s Side Story can only be completed on a New Game+ run of the game, so you will be unable to get the Promise Ending on your first run.
On a New Game+ run, you will be able to start her side story during the game’s seventh chapter of the game by heading back to the Kurosawa House’s courtyard after escaping the Tachibana House with Mayu. Once you have completed her side story, make sure you equip the Yae’s Sparkling Spirit Stone.
With Yae’s Sparkling Spirit Stone equipped, you will find a new specter waiting for you in the final boss room instead of the Kiryu Twins. This is the only optional ending where the final boss is completely unchanged from the Crimson Butterfly ending, so just fight the Kusabi like you did before and you’ll get to see The Promise.
Ending 3: The Abyss

The Abyss is the the third ending of the game and the last returning one from previous versions of the game. Like The Promise, the requirements to earn this ending have been changed in the remake. To get the The Abyss ending you must perform the following tasks during your playthrough
- Complete The Kusabi’s Side Story
- Equip Kusabi’s Sparkling Spirit Stone before entering the Ritual Area in the final chapter
Like Yae’s Side Story, the Kusabi’s Side Story will only unlock after you have gotten the Crimson Butterfly ending and are playing in New Game+. This Side Story will begin in Chapter 4 and have you go around town collecting journals left by The Folklorist in the town’s various underground areas.
Once you have completed the Kusabi’s Side Story and collected his Sparkling Spirit Stone, equip it and head to the final boss area to fight the Kusabi once more. Unlike the previous times you fought it, this time he will gain a second phase where he recovers his health and gains a new attack.
After defeating the Kusabi, proceed further down the path. Unlike the previous endings, this one actually has an additional boss fignt against a ghost you never got to fight during your first playthrough. This will be a tough, but short, fight and completing it will earn you perhaps the most bittersweet ending in the game.
Ending 4: Sprouting Wings

The Sprouting Wings ending is the first of two endings that is exclusive to this Remake. It can only be obtained after you have gotten both The Abyss and The Promise, as well as completed the Side Stories for Mayu Amakura and Sae Kurosawa. The requirements to get the ending as as follows:
- Obtain the The Abyss and The Promise endings
- Complete both of Sae’s Side Stories and Mayu Amakura‘s Side Story
- Equip Mayu’s Sparkling Spirit Stone and Sae’s Sparkling Spirit Stone before walking into the Ritual Room where you fight The Kusabi
The reason you need to complete The Abyss and The Promise before you can get this ending is because Sae’s second Side Story requires The Promise while Mayu’s requires The Abyss. After getting those endings, Sae’s second Side Story will spawn during the Final Chapter (if you have completed her first Side Story earlier in the same playthrough) and Mayu’s will spawn when you escape from the Tachibana House in Chapter 8.
You will have only a limited amount of time to complete Mayu’s Side Story as you will be separated from her once you enter The Old Tree, so I would recommend immediately heading to The Heavenly Bridge with her as soon as Chapter 8 begins.
Complete these two Side Stories and you’ll obtain both girls’ respective Sparkling Spirit Stones, which you’ll need to have equipped before you enter the final boss room just like the Spirit Stones in the previous two endings.
You’ll know you’ve activated the ending if Mayu’s specter appears in the Ritual Room. Just like in The Abyss ending you’ll have to face off against two phases in the Kusabi fight and fight Sae as the true final boss. After defeating Sae you’ll need to grab onto Mayu’s hand to get the ending.
Ending 5: The Remaining Sun

The final ending in the game is also by far the hardest on to get as it can only be obtained in Nightmare Mode and complete Mio’s Side Story, which in of itself is very hard to unlock. To get this ending you must
- Get every other ending in the game
- Start a New Game+ in Nightmare Mode
- Complete every Side Story in the game
- Complete Mio Amakura’s Side Story
- Equip Mio’s Sparkling Spirit Stone before facing The Kusabi
- Defeat Sae in under a minute
To unlock Mio Amakura’s Side Story you will need to complete every other Side Story in the game. This must done within a single save file so you will have to do every single Side Story on Nightmare difficulty, so make sure you save up as many photos points as you can as there are very few items that you can pick up during Nightmare Mode, so you will always be low on film and healing items.
Once you have unlocked it, you will be prompted to go to the entrance of the village at Misono Hill, the exact same location you had to visit during Sae and Yae’s Side Stories. Here you will see a specter of a young Mio and obtain her Sparkling Spirit Stone.
Like the other optional endings, you will need to fight both phases of the Kusabi boss and face Sae as the final boss. However, if you want The Remaining Sun ending, you need to defeat her in under one minute.
Defeating Sae in a single minute is difficult but not impossible. Make sure you have several zero film reels before you enter the fight and equip some charms which increase the damage output of your Radiant Lens, this should make her health go down fast enough to beat the time limit.
If you fail to defeat Sae within a minute, the game will lock you out of The Remaining Sun ending and instead give you The Promise. If you have beaten her fast enough, you’ll have the option to grab Mayu’s hand and watch The Remaining Sun. This ending is nearly identical to Sprouting Wings but has a post-credit scene.
