Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly’s Remake features 16 side stories, but that number may as well be 15 as two of them are a result of splitting a side quest from the original game in half and changing several of the steps along the way. Masumi Makimura’s Side Story in the remake was part of the Bloody Ring sidequest in the original game and as a result is the only Side Story in this remake to include cutscenes near the end of it. Masumi Makimura Side Story Walkthrough
Masumi’s Side Story will begin the moment you finish Miyako’s, attempt to exit Osaka House and he will appear in the doorway as a specter. Photograph him for your Ghost List and then pick up the notebook he left behind to find out that you need to find him in four different locations throughout the village.
The nearest location that Masumi is investigating is directly to the right of Osaka House, by the Trapped Boy’s house. Each time you locate an area he investigated you will find a specter of him to photograph as well as a new notebook that you must pick up.
Next make your way back up Misono Hill again, here you will encounter Masumi standing in the exact same location that Miyako was in during her Side Story, you’ll also find another one of his journals.
You’ll find Masumi’s ghost a third time by a stone depicting twins at the fork in the road on the west side of the village.
Finally, you’ll find Masumi’s ghost standing in front of Kureha Shrine. Pick up the fourth and final journal to complete this part of the sidequest. Unfortunately, that is all you can do for now as you will be barred from progressing any further until you reach the third chapter of the game.
Midway through exploring the Kurosawa House in Chapter 3 you will find the Radiant Lense, which can be used to get past bloody obstacles like locked doors or boxes. Once you have this lense, make your way to the Main Hall of the house and target the wall on the left to learn there is a hidden door there.
Once you can access this hidden room, equip the Exposure Lense to see an invisible ghost of Masumi. After you take a picture of him you will be able to pick up another journal as well as a Bloody Ring. We cannot do anything with this ring now though, so just keep it in your pocket until we reach Chapter 4.
Once you have escaped the Kurosawa House in Chapter 4, make your way back to the Osaka House and go to the back room that you fought Miyako in during her Side Story. Because you have the Bloody Ring in your inventory, the ghosts of Miyako and Masumi will attack you at the same time. Neither of them are particularly tough, but dealing with two enemies in a room this small can be difficult.
After defeating both of them, you will be able to pick up a Sard inside the room which can be used to listen to Masumi’s final moments with your Ghost Radio. This will fully complete Masumi’s Side Story.
