Phasmophobia: How to Use the Spirit Box

Phasmophobia How to Use the Spirit Box

Developed by Kinetic Games, Phasmophobia is an indie co-op horror game that challenges players to collect information about ghosts in haunted locations all the while being hunted by them. The game’s unique nature has piqued curiosity among avid horror game players since the game mechanics differ from traditional team-centric games. Using many super cool in-game equipment load-outs, players can collect evidence, ensure their protection, and track down the ghost type. In this guide, we will explain one such main piece of equipment, the Spirit Box – how you can activate and use it and what questions to ask the ghost to aid your investigation in Phasmophobia.

How to Activate the Spirit Box in Phasmophobia

There are three ways to activate the Spirit Box to communicate with ghosts in Phasmophobia. First, right-click your mouse button to activate it. The most common way to communicate with the ghost is using voice chat.

You can also use the text-based user interface which will appear upon turning on the Spirit Box. You can also use Vosk or Windows as the voice recognition method, having voice chat active will enable the Spirit Box to automatically ping a question every 10 seconds.

How to Use the Spirit Box in Phasmophobia

Here is how you can use the Spirit Box properly in Phasmophobia after activating it:

  • After activating the Spirit Box go around in all the rooms etc. and ask questions. Make sure the lights are off when you’re asking questions.
  • On the Spirit Box, you’ll see two icons – an “X” and a “ghost” icon. The “X” icon lights up when the ghost hears you and understands the question but there is no response from the ghost. The “ghost” icon lights up when the ghost responds by speaking. Icons lighting up during the hunting phase do not count as Spirit Box evidence.
  • When you ask a question and you don’t see either an “X” or “ghost” icon on the Spirit Box, then it means the game is not understanding your question or voice recognition is not working.
  • You can still get a response even if you’re outside of the ghost room but within the vicinity of the ghost.
  • You can also use it by activating it and just leaving it on the ground.
  • Turn off the Spirit Box when not in use since it emits a constant static which makes it hard to hear ghost activities properly.

If the ghost responds to the Spirit Box it can definitely be used as “ghost evidence” from the Journal. That way you can narrow down your ghost identification to a few ghosts i.e. Deogen, Mare, Moroi, Onryo, Phantom, Spirit, Poltergeist, Yokai, Wraith, Onryo, The Twins, and The Mimic.

Pro Tips

  • When using the Spirit Box, you’ll have to be in that room for at least two seconds before it can register your question.
  • It might be tricky to get a response from the ghost even if it’s one of the Spirit-box ghosts, so you’ll have to keep trying.
  • Some ghosts are shy. Make sure you read the info on the ghost in the van. It should say something like “Responds to: People who are alone”. Shy ghosts will only respond to you if you’re alone in the room.
  • If you ask questions and only hear deep breathing it is most probably a Deogen.
  • Use the Spirit Box when you’ve already found the ghost room using the EMF, Thermometer, etc.
  • If you Alt+Tab out of the game and come back in, your microphone may temporarily disconnect from the Spirit Box or the game itself. For some players, the issue is fixed by hitting the Windows key twice. But it’s better to avoid Alt-tabbing in Phasmophobia especially if you’re using the microphone to minimize glitches.

Questions to Ask Using the Spirit Box in Phasmophobia

Some of the common questions recognized by the Spirit Box are:

  • “What do you want?”
  • “Are you friendly?”
  • “Are you angry”
  • “Where are you?”
  • “Are you here?”
  • “Give us a sign!”
  • “Can you talk?”
  • “Throw something”
  • “Touch something”
  • “Show yourself”
  • “How old are you?” and so on.

Tip: You can use all the Ouija Board questions on the Spirit Box as well.
