You might already be familiar with most of the cursed possessions in Phasmophobia. The v0.8.1.0 February update added the 7th new unique cursed possession – The Monkey Paw – which might be the creepiest and also the most useful cursed possession in the game if played correctly. All the cursed possessions are interactive, including the Monkey Paw, meaning when you interact with them, you can get more information and clues about the ghost. In this guide we will tell you everything you need to know about the Monkey Paw in Phasmophobia – where to find it, how to use it, what are the 10 wishes and their effects.
What Is The Monkey Paw?
A monkey’s paw generally symbolizes a desire or a wish that comes true but at a cost. In Phasmophobia, the Monkey Paw is a severed hand that can grant specific wishes to the one holding it. These wishes come true but with grave consequences. So you better wish wisely!

Monkey Paw Wishes And Their Consequences

You can learn about wishes only inside Sunny Meadows Mental Institution where they are scattered in the form of tags. Once you find them, they will be added to your Journal.
You don’t actually need these tags to use the Monkey Paw in Phasmophobia, since they only serve as a note in your Journal. You will have between 3 to 5 wishes according to the difficulty level you’ve selected or reward multiplier for that contract:
- 0x – 1.9x Rewards: 5 wishes
- 2x – 2.9x Rewards: 4 wishes
- 3x Rewards or higher: 3 wishes
We’ve listed all the 10 possible wishes (according to Wish types) associated with the Monkey Paw in Phasmophobia, along with their Risk Levels. We’ve also added the positive and negative effects of those wishes. “High” means – exercise caution; “Moderate” – slightly dangerous but annoying and “Low” – comparatively safe:
| Wish Type | Risk Level | Wish | Positive Effects | Negative Effects |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ghost | High | I wish for activity | + Increases ghost activity | – Breaks the fuse box permanently – Locks the exit doors for 2 minutes |
| Ghost | High | I wish to see a ghost | + Ghost appears right in front of the player for 5 seconds | – Starts a cursed hunt after 5 seconds – Darkens player’s vision for the duration of the hunt |
| Ghost | Moderate | I wish to trap the ghost | + Traps the ghost in its favorite room for 1 minute | – Darkens player vision – Locks the ghost room and all exit doors for 1 minute plus for the hunt duration |
| Player | High | I wish to be safe | + Creates/ unlocks the nearest hiding spot (most commonly the room you’re in) | – Blows up lights in current room – The ghost can hear you & detect your equipment from any distance during subsequent hunts |
| Player | Moderate to High | I wish to leave | + Instantly unlocks all exit doors even during a hunt | – Darkens player vision – Severely decreases player movement speed (both effects last for 5 seconds) |
| Player | Low to Moderate | I wish to be sane | + Sets all players sanity to 50% regardless of whether their sanity was high or low | – Depletes sanity quicker over time – Ghost (may) change its favorite room |
| Other | High | I wish for knowledge | + Crosses off incorrect evidence in the Journal for the current ghost | – Starts a cursed hunt – Darkens player vision – Decreases player’s audio permanently (you’re basically blind and deaf!) |
| Other | High | I wish to revive my friend | + Revives a dead player randomly | – 50 % chance of killing the living player – (Can’t be used if no one is dead.) |
| Other | Low | I wish for (weather) (Snow, sunny, foggy, clear sky, rain) | + Changes weather to the desired type | – Darkens player vision – Player loses 50% sanity |
| Secret Wish | Unknown | I wish for anything | + Randomly grants one of the above wishes to the player (affects all the players) | – Depends on what you were granted |
Note:
- When the player’s vision is darkened, the light range on the flashlight is decreased and the surrounding lights appear dimmer.
- If you “wish to leave” and you have not used the “ I wish for activity” wish, it will actually start a hunt to give you a purpose to wish to leave.
- For every “positive” consequence of the wish there are 2 or more “negative” consequences that come with it.
