Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch #4 Adds Color-Blind Accessibility and 1,000 Fixes

Baldur’s Gate 3's Patch #4 Adds Color-Blind Accessibility

On November 2, 2023, video game developer Larian Studios released the fourth major patch for their critically acclaimed RPG Baldur’s Gate 3. This patch is advertised as offering over 1,000 fixes, tweaks, and changes to the game.

This is the fourth release in a series of major patches that change large portions of the game. The game’s first major patch focused on fixing thousands of glitches, the second added various features such as Withers’ Wardrobe of Wayward Friends, and the third focused on adding Mac support.

In between each of these major patches several smaller hotfix patches have been released to fix various bugs in the game. These various hotfixes have focused on smaller issues such as fixing a bug related to Minthara’s romance.

The major highlights of Patch #4 are the ability to customize the appearance of your hirelings when recruiting them and the addition of accessibility options such as color-blind graphics options.

These color-blind options allow you to choose between protanopia, deuteranopia, and tritanopia. These options affect the colors used to distinguish factions and relations: map and minimap icons, portrait frames, and character outlines.

Other changes made in this patch include gameplay fixes such as knowledge divine clerics gaining the skill ‘Channel Divinity’ at lvl 6 as intended. Another skill change is that archfey warlocks will get a choice of cantrip at lvl 4.

In addition to these important gameplay changes, a few humorous additions have appeared in this patch. Such as the ability to read the recipe for the emperor’s favorite soup or use sponges to clean your party members.

This patch has also included several fixes to help improve the flow of the game as well as the player’s immersion. Players can now expect Lae’zel to properly comment on what happens during Act 3, Cazador to turn into mist and fly if he ever falls down a chasm, and Yenna to properly return to camp.

Several UI changes have also been made in this patch to offer a more streamlined and relaxing gameplay experience. These changes include adding map icons for when characters want to talk to you, unique map icons for the Magic Mirror/Withers Wardrobe of Wayward Friends, and displaying combat rounds in a separate heading in your combat log.

The full patch notes for Patch #4 can be read on Larian Studio’s Steam page. Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available to purchase on PC via Steam and GOG, with the PlayStation 5 version expected to be released on September 2, 2023. An Xbox Series S|X port of the game is also expected to be released in 2023, but no release date has been given currently.
