As you reach the Druid Grove in Baldur’s Gate 3, it seems that you are not the only one in this region with significant problems. The refugee Tiefling situation here is very bad and the tension is reaching its maximum boiling point. As you talk to all the refugees, you might stumble into a charismatic Tiefling kid named Mattis, trying to sell you a Lucky Ring. This whole situation screams “scam,” but it doesn’t seem like you could lose anything from keeping the ring. So, should you buy the Lucky Ring that the young Tiefling Mattis is selling you in Baldur’s Gate 3, should you look through his wares to see what else he can give you, or should you just leave? Here is the answer.

Should you buy the Lucky Ring from Mattis in BG3?
After playing around a bit with the kid, you can end up getting the Lucky Ring that Mattis is selling in Baldur’s Gate 3 for free. Just annoying him about the coin toss will be enough to make him give you the ring as a gift.
The magic, lucky ring is actually fake and it is a useless item. Just add it to the junk after opening your inventory.
However, the ring isn’t the actual scam here, as Mattis is doing more than just scamming buyers with fake “magic” rings, he is pickpocketing customers. After you get the ring, you can browse his wares.
If you fail a Perception check, his friend will steal some stuff off of you, potentially starting a side quest to get your belongings back.
Still, to answer the question if you should buy the Lucky Ring or not from Mattis in BG3, the answer is a definitive no. The rewards you would get from going around to look for your stuff wouldn’t be worth the effort.
However, if you don’t want to miss out on some content, then you need to look through Mattis’ wares, miss the first Perception check, allowing the kids to steal from you, and then interact with Mattis again, pass the Perception check, and learn that they have stolen more items from you.
This way, you will start a side quest to get back your belongings from the Tiefling pickpockets.
