Wartales is a strategic turn based RPG where you create your personal band of mercenaries and fight to get wealth and fame. One of the first choices that players will face will be what traits their merry band of mercenaries will have. At the start, you might have no idea which traits are good, bad, or horrible. Luckily, the game gives you the chance to randomize these traits, which would be the best choice for someone who has no idea how the game works. However, if you want to build the best band of mercenaries, you will need to know which traits are the best. So, in this guide, we will give you a tier list of the best starting traits in Wartales, both positive and negative, to help you make the most powerful crew in the game.

Best Starting Positive Traits Tier List in Wartales
When selecting what traits your companions have in Wartales, you will have the choice to either give them one positive trait or two positive traits and one negative one. Unfortunately, there is no simple copy paste solution when it comes to giving traits.
Since there are 6 classes in Wartales, each one would benefit from different traits. For example, an Archer would not benefit from the Strong trait (+5% Strength), however, this is a very good trait for other classes.

So, in this tier list, we will give ratings to all the starting positive traits in Wartales, based on their objective quality, and then we will also tell you which classes will benefit most from those traits:
| Trait | Rating | Effects | Best Classes | Reason For Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bloodthirsty | S | +3% Critical Hit | All | Critical hits are extremely useful no matter what class your companions have. In general, give this to Ranger and Archer every time. |
| Quick | A | +1 Movement | Ranger, Archer, Spearman | Movement is very important for troops that need to travel a lot around the battlefield. One movement means one whole extra meter to walk. |
| Thick-skinned | A | +3% Guard | Swordsman, Brute, Warrior | Guard will make sure that your tanks don’t always get hit with 100% damage. Even a 3% bonus is good. |
| Brawny | B | +5% Constitution | Swordsman, Brute, Warrior | Give this trait only to your tanks. If you think you want to do more damage than what you receive, give them Strong. |
| Strong | B | +5% Strength | Swordsman, Brute, Warrior, Spearman | Increases damage for these classes. |
| Nimble | B | +5% Dexterity | Ranger, Archer | Increases damage for these classes. |
| Clever | C | +5% Experience | All | How fast your troops level up doesn’t matter since there is no timed end-game apocalyptic event coming. |
| Volunteer | C | -10% Wage | All | You can make the money to pay them even without this trait. |
| Hard-working | D | +20% Profession Experience | All | Professions level up extremely fast even without this trait. |
Best Starting Negative Traits Tier List in Wartales
You might want to give your companions in Wartales, more often than not, more positive traits. If you give them two, you will also have to give them negative traits. Luckily, negative traits aren’t so bad if you know how to choose them.
So, in this tier list, we will give ratings to all the starting negative traits in Wartales, based on their objective quality, and then we will also tell you which classes will benefit most from those traits:
| Trait | Rating | Effects | Best Classes | Reason For Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Loafer | S | -3 Carrying Capacity | All | You will get ponies to increase carrying capacity. |
| Pickpocket | A | +3 Wage | All | Wages won’t be a problem if you can fulfill enough quests. |
| Glutton | B | +1 Food Consumption | All | Food can be harder to constantly provide than money, so this might not be the best negative trait. |
| Lazy | B | -20% Profession Experience | All | How fast your companions gain experience isn’t that important, since you can take all the time in the world. However, getting negative experience traits can prolong the experience for too long. |
| Stupid | B | -5% Experience | All | – |
| Scrawny | C | -5% Strength | Ranger, Archer | Really good negative trait for the best classes, horrible for the other 4. |
| Drunkard | C | Must Consume Alcohol | All | This can be very annoying, but it can be solved by not giving the companion alcohol ever. They will be very upset but they will lose the trait if you don’t give them anything long enough. |
| Unlucky | F | -3% Critical Hit | Swordsman, Brute, Warrior | Horrible trait, never give it to anyone. |
| Depressed | F | -2 Willpower | Ranger, Archer | At 15 Willpower, companions get a second chance if they get to 0 HP. So, never give this trait to anyone. |
