One of the weirder aspects of Baldur’s Gate 3 is the tadpoles and their weird influence on all that they touch. You can tell that something is wrong with them, and you can occasionally use Illithid powers that they give you to influence people around you. Still, if you want to play a good character, maybe using the power of evil tentacle aliens isn’t really a good idea is it? Well, after you have your first dream with the Guardian, you will have the ability to consume any of the tadpoles you find or, if you pick one up during your travels, you will get a cutscene where you get to choose if you want to open your mind to it. So, should you open your mind to the tadpole and consume it in Baldur’s Gate 3? Here is the answer.

What Happens If You Open Mind to Tadpole?

After you have your first dream with the Guardian you created at the start of the game, you will get a cutscene where you will have to choose whether to open your mind to the tadpole or reject it, if you select to consume one in your inventory or find one in your travels.

Opening your mind to the tadpole will give you access to special Illithid abilities and powers. After that you can convince your companions to also consume them and you can all get different illithid powers, but each time you use a tadpole, you lose it.

Should You Consume and Open Mind to Tadpole in BG3?

In the first two acts of BG3, there are no real consequences for consuming tadpoles and gaining new Illithid powers.

The only moment things can change will be in Act 3, when you get a choice to consume a tadpole that will evolve you, unlocking the outer layer of Illithid abilities and changing your visual appearance.

So, yes, you should consume and open your mind to the tadpole in BG3, since there are no story disadvantages and you will gain some cool, new powers. Just open your inventory and you will have a new category next to Alchemy called Illithid Powers.

Here, you can use all of the tadpoles you found to learn new skills. Even some of your companions can use these powers if you convince them to consume the tadpoles as well.

And that is all you need to know about the decision to consume and open mind to tadpole in Baldur’s Gate 3. Check out other interesting BG3 guides and articles:
