Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Save the Masks

Baldur's Gate 3 How to Save the Masks

Baldur’s Gate 3 does a really good job to make players second-guess their moral choices. As you progress through the first act, you will notice that Auntie Ethel is actually an evil Hag and that all of the people that she keeps inside her Tea House lair have been tricked either into eternal servitude (the Masks) or eternal punishment. Auntie Ethel likes to do tricky deals with desperate people just for the fun of it, and the Masks that you can fight after passing the Gnarly Door are no different. So, how can you save the enthralled Masks that serve Auntie Ethel in Baldur’s Gate 3? You can find the answer below.

Can You Save the Masks in Auntie Ethel’s Tea House in BG3?

There are four Masks in BG3, protecting Auntie Ethel in her lair:

  • Mask of Regret
  • Mask of Vengeance
  • Mask of Servitude
  • Mask of Terror

You can only save one of the Masks in BG3, the Mask of Regret, since all of the other ones have been through too much mental anguish and cannot be saved anymore.

How to Save the Masks in BG3

Most players will think that you can save the Masks by knocking them out in the first battle with them rather than end them. However, if you do this, they will be unconscious even after you fight Auntie Ethel, and will only wake up after a Long Rest.

Also, never take their masks off, either through pickpocket or looting once they are unconscious, as they will instantly die.

Some players have reported that they found them back inside after a Long Rest, and some said they have disappeared. Since this method isn’t foolproof, we will show you the best way to save the Masks in Baldur’s Gate 3.

To save the Masks in BG3 you will need to follow these steps:

  1. Sneak past the Masks without fighting them.
  2. When you fight Auntie Ethel, avoid defeating the Masks and quickly take her out.
  3. When she offers you the deal for the extra Ability point, refuse it and defeat her for good.

Now, the Masks should deaggro and you should be able to talk with them. The Mask of Regret is the only one that will take their mask off, allowing you to talk to her and tell her to get out. The other ones will keep their masks and talk about Auntie Ethel as if you didn’t just end her life.

If you take the deal, the Masks will continue the fight even after she leaves the underground dungeon.

Should You Save the Masks in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Now that we know exactly how you can save the Masks in BG3, the real question is: Should you even do it?

There aren’t any real benefits gameplay-wise to saving the Masks and the advantage you get from taking Auntie Ethel’s deal is just too good to gloss over. It all comes down to personal preference.

Would you prefer to free all of the tortured people that Auntie Ethel has imprisoned, or would you like to take a free Ability point, an offer which you will never get again in the whole game? We would say that it would be better to let the Masks die.

And that is all you need to know about how to save the Masks in Baldur’s Gate 3. Check out other interesting BG3 guides and articles:
