The Paladin class has become the favorite class for many players enjoying Baldur’s Gate 3. Knowing how to break the Oath of Vengeance will help you avoid making this mistake and end up as an Oathbreaker. Of course, the game isn’t super rigid and lets you make up for your blunder. Still, not breaking your oath in the first place may be something you’re concerned with. Or maybe that’s why you love Baldur’s Gate 3 and you want to know how to break your Oath of Vengeance so you can experience the many permeations this game offers.

What Is the Oath of Vengeance in BG3?

The Oathbreaker is a hidden subclass of the Paladin class and you can only discover it by, as the name suggests, breaking your Oath. To a Paladin, their Oath is what drives them. It is what motivates them to be who they are.

If you choose the Oath of Vengeance for your Paladin in BG3, you can become a fantastic frontline fighter who also casts spells like a boss. You can smite your enemies and get a set of spells and class abilities that make you a fearsome foe for your opponents.

Here are some of the spells and features you get to enjoy:

  • Fight the Greater Evil
  • No Mercy for the Wicked
  • Inquisitor’s Might
  • Abjure Enemy
  • Hunter’s Mark
  • Hold Person
  • Relentless Avenger
  • Protection from Energy

Those are just a few of the perks you can make use of as an Oath of Vengeance Paladin. Naturally, if you break your Oath, you won’t get these spells and instead access different features and spells.

How to Break Oath of Vengeance in BG3

The description of the Oath of Vengeance is “You have set aside even your own purity to right wrongs and deliver justice to those who have committed the most grievous sins.”

Taking that into account, it’s safe to assume that when playing Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s not rocket science to know how to break the Oath of Vengeance. Just do things that go against your justice or betray those who trust you. Also, if you don’t smite evildoers, you can break your oath.

So, the easiest way to break the Oath of Vengeance is at the Druid Camp by freeing Sazza from the cage door.

Here are some of the ways to break the Oath of Vengeance in BG3:

  • Betray and slay the Tieflings to rescue Lae’zel
  • Spare the Hag rather than smiting her (intimidation to get the Ability Score also counts)
  • Torture Liam
  • Show mercy to clearly evil characters

There may be other ways to break the Oath of Vengeance and because of how big and flexible BG3 is, it’s hard to know all of the ways. Go out and discover them for yourself!

Once you’ve broken your Oath, the Oathbreaker Knight will visit you. You will be asked if you wish to become an Oathbreaker yourself or pay the price for your mistake (1,000 gold).

And that is all you need to know about how to break the Oath of Vengeance in Baldur’s Gate 3. Check out other interesting BG3 guides and articles:
