After you meet and recruit Karlach in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will be tasked with defeating the hunters inside the Toll Collectors’ House. After you manage to defeat the powerful enemies inside, or just ignore them if you didn’t recruit Karlach, you will find an Ornate Wooden Hatch inside the main room. If you go down the hatch, you will find a locked Vault Door that most players won’t have the key for. If you do manage to get past that door, you will see that there is a secret room that you can’t access and there is no clear trigger to open a door there. So, in this guide, we will show you exactly how to open the Vault Door down the Ornate Wooden Hatch and then get inside the Secret Cellar room in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to Open the Vault Door in the Ornate Wooden Hatch in BG3
Once you get down the Ornate Wooden Hatch in BG3, you will find a Vault Door. There are two ways you can open this door:
- Use the Toll Collector’s Key.
- Break down the door.
The nice way some players can open the Vault Door inside the Ornate Wooden Hatch in BG3 is to use the Toll Collector’s Key.
You can find this key really close to the location where you recruited Karlach. It is right next to the hill, close to the bridge. Players can easily see it if they hold down the Alt key (highlight key) in the area.

Otherwise, if you don’t want to walk around in circles, you can just use a two handed weapon or a heavy weapon to destroy the Vault Door.
How to Open the Secret Cellar Door in Ornate Wooden Hatch in BG3
After you walk a bit through the cellar, you will notice that there is a room you cannot access. To open the secret cellar door in the Ornate Wooden Hatch in BG3, you will have to sit two characters on the thrones in the northeastern room.
To do this, you just need to Toggle Group Mode (press G or the button under the party portraits) and select two characters to sit on the thrones, as in the image at the top of the guide. Once they both sit on the thrones, the secret cellar door will open.
If you make the companions get up from the seats the door will close, so you will need to leave them there. There is also a trap right at the entrance of the secret room which you should jump over, otherwise there will be acid all over the place.
