On May 2, 2024, the famed Nintendo leaker Pyoro posted a cryptic screenshot to Twitter showcasing the cartridge of the NES game Nintendo World Championship. This naturally caused the internet to uproar in speculation ranging from the possibility of the game being released on the Nintendo Switch Online service to maybe Nintendo bringing back the championship.
For those unaware, the Nintendo World Championship NES 1990 cartridge was used in a competition across America in the 1990s. When booting the game up players would have a few minutes to compete for high scores in short demos of Nintendo games. Such as collecting 50 coins in Super Mario Brothers. The game soon became a coveted collector’s item in the 2000s.
On the morning of May 3, 2024, it was discovered that the ESRB had assigned an E-rating to a Nintendo Switch game titled “Nintendo World Championship NES Edition”. This listing describes it as “A collection of 2D challenges and platform games in which players traverse through various modes”

This ESRB posting seems to be full confirmation that the title will be coming to Nintendo Switch, but surprisingly it seems it won’t be coming to the Nintendo Switch Online service as an NES classic title, but will rather be a full retail release!
Nintendo leaker Pyoro would soon take to Twitter with further replies to people’s inquiries about the game. Stating in a few follow-up tweets that that it wouldn’t be free, but it won’t be full price either. Gamers will be expected to pay $30 for this classic NES title. A far cry from the high prices sites like eBay charge for the original NES cartridge.
Another message from Pyoro stated that the game won’t just be a port. However it is unclear if he meant that it won’t just be an Nintendo Switch Online port or if the retail edition of the game will be making any changed to the classic title.
While there is currently no official confirmation from Nintendo about this Nintendo World Championship rerelease, the combination of the ESRB rating and Pyoro’s tweets points to it being real and happening sooner than one would expect.
