Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 excitingly adapts the classic Venom symbiote storyline from the comics into video game form. The game advertised heavily that Peter would obtain the Venom symbiote and gain new powers from it. While the mere concept of this excited many gamers, it also naturally caused them to draw comparisons to Activision’s Ultimate Spider-Man on the PlayStation 2. That game adapted the Ultimate Universe version of the Venom storyline with a big selling point of the game being that you can play as the villainous Venom. So many gamers are wondering, can you play as Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2? Here is the answer.
Can You Play as Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2?
You can play as Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. During the mission “Don’t Be Scared” Harry Osborn will regain the symbiote and transform into the beloved villain Venom.
You’ll then get to go on a rampage throughout Oscorp, fighting through hordes of enemies and even fight a boss battle.
Venom plays very differently from the two Spider-Men you’ve controlled through the game so far. His attacks are slower but are more powerful, allowing you to defeat most enemies within a single hit.
While Venom lacks the gadgets and web abilities of Miles and Peter, he does sport several unique abilities of his own. If the player presses the L1 and Square buttons simultaneously, Venom will slam his fists forward and take down a group of enemies standing directly in front of him.
Other abilities completely unique to Venom include a move called “Rage” when the player presses L1+Circle where he sprouts symbiote tentacles in all directions to defeat enemies. He also has a grab move on the R1 button where grabs a single enemy to either beat other enemies with or throw them in any direction.
After rampaging through Oscorp using Venom’s traversal unique skills such as pressing L2+R2 to leap and holding R2 to charge through weak walls, you’ll end up on the New York streets where a boss fight against Kraven the Hunter is waiting for you.
The fight against Kraven is much easier than the one earlier in the game as Venom is stronger than Peter was. You cannot grab Kraven or use takedowns on him, but after a few parries and beatdowns, you’ll have him defeated in no time.

While your time playing as Venom is short, it’s a welcome throwback to the classic PlayStation 2 game that many players will enjoy.
