One of the things that made Dynasty Warriors a beloved franchise, besides the ability to defeat 1k enemies in 5 minutes, is the fact that you can mess around with history and change its course as you win unwinnable battles and save heroes from their certain death. Hypothetical routes are the paths that you can discover by changing history, something made clear by the game when you get a big notification on the screen that says “Fate Altered.” In this guide, I’ve written down all the possible fates you can alter, creating hypothetical scenarios in Dynasty Warriors Origins.
What Does “Fate Altered” Mean?
During some specific missions, you can defeat optional enemies or just generally not listen to the objectives to end the battle in a different way than it’s supposed to. This usually results in you saving the life of a character that is supposed to die in that battle.
There aren’t huge story events that change thanks to these changes, but it does feel good to know that one of your favorite characters is still around to help bring peace to China. What you’ll get is usually a nice little scene after the battle and the “true” ending for that faction if you alter all possible fates.
Every Hypothetical Route in Dynasty Warriors Origins
Wu
Sun Jian’s Fate
The first hypothetical route for Wu is to save Sun Jian in Chapter 3 during the Battle of Xiangyang.
Sun Jian will advance towards Huang Zu in the lower left side of the map. Once he reaches the corner of the map, he’ll see fog and get lost there. At that moment, which is usually around 4 minutes into the battle, you’ll need to have opened the gate to the north of his location and reached the clearing there.
A mirage of Zhang Jiao will spawn there which you need to defeat. You only have around 5 minutes, during which Huang Gai will advance toward Sun Jian. Once he reaches his location, you will get a cutscene with a boulder falling over Sun Jian.
If he’s not dead after that, you’ve altered fate and saved Sun Jian.

Sun Ce’s Fate
During the Suppression of Wu battle in Chapter 4, you can save Sun Ce’s life and alter fate.
Play the mission as you want at the start, and then, when Sun Ce disappears in the forest to the west, head there as well and run to the west, using the Sacred Eye, to find the way to a secret cave to the west. At the end of the path you’ll find Bailuan. Defeat him and you’ll save Sun Ce.

Wei
Dian Wei’s Fate

During the Escape from Wan Castle battle in Chapter 4, the way you can alter fate is to save Dian Wei’s life.
Close to the end of the battle, right after Cao Cao escapes the castle, the western gate will open. Wait at the exit and defeat all of the enemy officers. Then, head inside the castle and defeat all of the remaining officers inside.
Once all officers that were inside the castle have been defeated, you will get the “Fate Altered” notification, which means you’ve saved him.
You have limited time to save Dian Wei, which starts once the gates open. Look at the battle area where he’s situated. If the line goes fully red, that’s when Dian Wei loses and dies.
If one of the officers runs past you after Cao Cao, make sure you follow and defeat them. All the officers that were inside the castle need to be defeated to unlock this hypothetical.
Guo Jia’s Fate
The next time you can alter fate is during the Battle of Mt. Bailang to save the life of Guo Jia.
This one will require you to escort Tian Chou and defeat Bailuan in less than 5 minutes. To do this, you will rush to Tian Chou’s side and push through the bases on the western side of the map as quickly as possible.
Once Tian Chou reaches the corridor close to the northern part of the map, Bailuan will spawn. If Gua Jia says something about not receiving word from Tian Chou and not being able to afford more time, you’re likely a minute away from failing.
After defeating Bailuan, you can figure out if you did it in time based on their reaction. Bailuan will be happy to have stalled you if you failed, and Gua Jia will be very happy if you did it right, followed by the “Fate Altered” notification.
Make sure to quickly run back to Cao Cao after this, because he will die if you don’t support him.
Battle of Chibi
During the Battle of Chibi in Chapter 5, you can alter fate by stopping the Huang Gai’s strategem and avoiding losing all of your boats to the fire.
To do this you will need Gua Jia to be alive. Otherwise, Huang Gai will just suddenly get a little cutscene and burn the boats. With Gua Jia’s help, he will tell you to head to Huang Gai’s location and fight him.
You only get 2 minutes to defeat him after the “winds change” and you can approach Huang Gai, so make sure to use your best 1v1 abilities.
Shu
The only fate you can alter during the Shu route is during the Battle of Changban in Chapter 5. Instead of running away with Liu Bei, you will have to defeat Cao Cao. That’s all there is to this hypothetical, and it is hinted at quite obviously by the game as well.
After you pass the bridge, you will get a notification where the victory condition will change. Instead of just supporting Liu Bei to escape, you will now get the victory condition to defeat Cao Cao.
The best strategy to do this is to defeat the officers on the other side of the bridge first, to make sure Liu Bei doesn’t lose while you go on your quest, and then head straight for Cao Cao. Your best bet is for Liu Bei to take a very long time on his road while you defeat Cao Cao’s forces.
