The Tiger of Jiangdong, Sun Jian, is known for stealing the Imperial Seal and losing his life during the horrible ambush Liu Biao prepared for him. History seems to go the same way in Dynasty Warriors Origins as you get to watch live as a boulder destroys him during the Battle of Xiangyang at the end of Chapter 3. What some players might not realize is that you can save his life and alter his fate. In this guide I will show you exactly what you need to do to save Sun Jian’s life and alter fate in Dynasty Warriors Origins, getting him as a helper in the upcoming chapters.

How to Save Sun Jian in Dynasty Warriors Origins

Of course, the only way you can save Sun Jian is by going down the Wu route, supporting the Sun family to get absolute power in China. Otherwise you will not participate at the Battle of Xiangyang and won’t get the chance to save him.

On the map below, you can see the exact location you’re supposed to reach in around 4 minutes. After 4 minutes have passed, Huang Gai will start advancing towards Sun Jian and Sun Jian will mention seeing fog.

Once this happens, at the location shown above, a mirage of Zhang Jiao will appear and you will have to defeat it in less than 5 minutes to save Sun Jian’s life. Once those minutes pass, Huang Gai will reach Sun Jian and you’ll get a cutscene with a boulder falling over him. If the MC magically saves Sun Jian, you’ve done it!

Strategy to Get It Done

I would recommend skipping over the fight with Li Yan and Yi Ji to get to the designated location quicker, but it shouldn’t be too hard to do it in time either.

Pang Ji is a mandatory fight, since you can’t attempt to open the gate unless you have troops there, and you can’t have troops there unless you defeat this guy.

After entering and conquering the base, head straight to the next gate and defeat the Mighty Liu Biao General. If you’ve managed to get past the gate and inside the designated area before Sun Jian said his fog line, then you should have more than enough time for the optional boss fight.

Now, the actual problem is the boss fight with mirage Zhang Jiao. In all honesty, if you’re not playing on Easy, then you won’t be able to win this fight in less than 5 minutes unless you’re in New Game+. The battle is probably so hard because the devs wanted hypotheticals to be something you would do in secondary playthroughs.

Take it like this, if you can beat Lu Bu at Hulao Gate, then you have a chance at beating Zhang Jiao to save Sun Jian.
