The bonds in Dynasty Warriors Origins are one of the more entertaining additions to the Dynasty Warriors games, as it creates a special connection between the player and the characters. Now their story isn’t the only thing that makes you appreciate them, but also their personal interactions with your character, which will help you understand their personality better. Though it’s relatively straightforward for most characters, some require some very special hidden requirements to max their bonds. So, in this guide I will show you exactly how to get max level bond with all of the heroes in Dynasty Warriors Origins.
How Bonds Work in Dynasty Warriors Origins
During your time playing Dynasty Warriors Origins, you will occasionally have the opportunity to befriend fellow officers in the game. There are three main ways this can usually happen: through story events, by completing special training missions in battles, or by completing special request battles.
Completing training missions for bonds will reward you with Skill Points, while the Request battles will reward you with +3 Old Coins. Cutscene will only reward you with +1 Old Coins and, potentially, Battle Arts.
You usually get nothing by achieving max level bond with an officer, but you get closer to getting the Spirit of Camaraderie achievement, which you get by maxing out bonds with all characters in the game.
The main thing that makes bonds important is the possibility to gain Battle Arts from certain bond levels. Some of the most powerful Battle Arts are only available through max bonds, so that’s the main reason you should try this. But it’s best to know which bonds are worth it.
How to Max All Bonds in Dynasty Warriors Origins
There are a total of 46 bonds you can get with the warriors in the game. Most of them will be obtained by following a certain faction route, so we’ll order them by this metric.
If you want to complete the bond for one of these characters and you’re on on their faction route, then that’s probably the reason why you couldn’t do it!
Cao
Cao Cao

Just complete the Wei route by aligning with Cao Cao.
Chen Gong

Appears first after the Sishui Gate battle with a request. Complete the request, complete another random battle, and he will appear again with his first bond cutscene.
Here is where some players might get stuck with his bond. You have to find him after the Battle of Puyang to get his second cutscene and training. After finishing the training, you can find him for the max bond cutscene.
You have to do this before the Battle of Xiapi in Chapter 4 and only while you’re on the Wei path.
Dian Wei
You’ll get his first interaction at the start of Chapter 3 with some training, followed by a bond cutscene. This will happen again later.
To get his level 5 bond and final cutscene, you’ll need to save him at Wan Castle.
Guo Jia

Complete his training sessions and then save him at Battle of Mt. Bailang in Chapter Five. You’ll get a letter followed by the final bond cutscene.
Battle Art Reward:
- Max Bond → Sword – Fickle Fury
Jia Xu
Simple one here, just complete the trainings he’ll give you after various battles (or mediate). The final bond comes after the Escape from Xiaopei battle.
Li Dian
You’ll get the first bond relatively early after Sishui Gate and the next part will only start in Chapter 4.
The first request will be to find an elder, which you can see the location for on this map.
In Chapter 5 you’ll get a second request to find an elder, which will be next to Pingyuan.
Xiahou Dun

Complete his training, then his request in Chapter 4. In Chapter 5, you’ll get a letter from him, followed by the final cutscene.
Battle Art Reward:
- Max Bond → Podao – (Sp.) Relentless Whirl Slash
Xiahou Yuan
Complete his trainings and get the final bond after the Assault on Xiapi.

Complete his trainings or mediate, then get a letter in Chapter 5 for the final bond.

Xun Yu
Similar to Xun You, complete his requests and get the final bond in Chapter 5.
Yu Jin
Complete his trainings or mediate, then talk to him in Chapter 5 for the final bond.
Yuan Shao

This one is a bit weird. You’ll first need to complete the training he gives you after the 10 Attendants battle.
Then, you’ll need to complete the Battle of Jiejiao for the Liu side before choosing a side. This will get you a letter, which will be followed by a bond cutscene and training.
Afterward, you’ll need to go with Cao Cao and read his letter after the Battle of Guandu. Find him and get the last bond cutscene before the end of Chapter 4.
Yue Jin
Complete his trainings or mediate, then get a letter in Chapter 5 for the final bond.
Zhang He
Similar to Yuan Shao, you have to complete a battle for the Liu first before joining up permanently with Cao Cao.
You’ll need to complete the Battle of Jiejiao for the Liu side before choosing a side. This will get you a letter, which will be followed by a bond cutscene and training.
The final bond comes in Chapter 5.

He will first appear in Chapter 2. Complete his request and wait.
The next time you’ll meet will be in Chapter 3 after the battle of Xiangyang, with some training. Later you’ll get a bond cutscene after the battle of Xiaopei.
To max out, at the beginning of Chapter 5, find him for some training, read the letter he sends you afterward, and find him for the last cutscene.
Gan Ning
Extremely straightforward, just talk to him when you get the notification in the Jing province and complete his trainings or mediate.
At the beginning of Chapter 4 you’ll get a letter from him and get a location for his last bond cutscene.
Han Dang
Who? Oh, right, him.
Nothing complicated here, just follow the Sun clan route and complete the trainings he gives you or mediate.
Huang Gai

Straightforward. Complete the trainings or mediate, then finish the Battle of Chibi successfully for the Sun clan. You’ll get the final bond scene after that.
Battle Art Reward:
- Max Bond → Gauntlet – Heaven and Earth’s Wrath
Ling Tong
Relatively easy. Just talk to him when he pops up on the map and complete his requests.
Lu Meng
The only hard part for this bond is that you’ll have to find an Elder to complete his first request. Here’s where to find him.
After that you’ll later get another request and the final bond cutscene.
Lu Su
The only weirder thing with this bond is that you’ll always get a letter before the bond cutscene, so make sure after completing his requests to check your letters. They can take a battle to spawn.
Sun Ce
First 3 cutscene come from just following the Sun clan’s story.
The 4th one comes after saving his life and the last one comes later after you receive a letter from him.
Sun Jian
Similar to Sun Ce, you get the first three bond cutscene naturally and the last one comes after you save him.
You’ll first need to complete the request from Yuanhua to heal him. Then, a letter will come from him, accompanied by his appearance on the map for the last bond event.
Sun Quan
Just complete the Wu route by aligning with the Sun clan.
Sun Shangxiang

Complete her trainings, read a letter after Subjugate Huang Zu, and talk to her for the final bond cutscene.
Battle Art Reward:
- Max Bond → Wheels – Twin Tiger Blast
Taishi Ci
This is one that non-completionists will likely mess up. Taishi Ci will appear after the Battle of Beihai in Chapter 3 on the Liu side.
Then, to complete his bond, you’ll need to go down the Sun route.
Zhou Tai
Complete his trainings or mediate, then talk to him in Chapter 5 for the final bond.
Zhou Yu

Complete his requests and get the final bond cutscene right before Chibi.
Battle Art Reward:
- Max Bond → Staff – Double Wave Slam
Liu
Guan Yu

You’ll get the first few bonds very naturally. Then you’ll have to complete his training from Chapter 2, combined with the request from Chapter 4.
A letter will come and you’ll get the max bond cutscene.

Letter and cutscene in Chapter 4.
Request and final cutscene in Chapter 5.
Other
Diaochan

You’ll get the first two levels through the story. Then you’ll get two requests from her after the 10 Attendants battle.
To get the final cutscene and max your bond, you’ll need to raise the Peace Rank to 3 in the Sili Province. You’ll get a letter from Wang Yun and find her waiting for you in Ziluan’s village.
This can most likely only be done in New Game+, unless you’re a masochist and do a lot of skirmishes.
Dong Zhuo

This one is very hard to miss. Just complete the training and the request he gives before the end of Chapter 2. You’ll get his final bond scene after the 10 Attendants fight.
Lu Bu
To start his bond you will need to defeat him at Hulao Gate on any difficulty.
This will unlock his first bond cutscene and training in Xiapi. After the training is done, you’ll get another cutscene and training in the same location.
This is a very easy bond to max, since you can just meditate both trainings. The only harder part is defeating him at Hulao Gate.
You have to max his bond by the Battle of Xiapi (Wei and Shu) during Chapter Four, otherwise you’ll lose him forever. You can quickly do this in Chapter 3.
Battle Art Reward:
- Max Bond → Unlock in any shop to buy: Halberd – Valiant Steed Blitz
Zhang Jiao
You can only do this in New Game+. Start the game using the same save file from Chapter 1 and his bond events will start appearing on the map with some training sessions. You can’t mediate, so complete them.
Once you complete Lv. 4 Bond, you can end Chapter 1 and find him in the village in Chapter 2 for the max bond cutscene.
