After you finish the battle with the Goblins in Baldur’s Gate 3, Halsin will make it seem like there will be a choice between the Mountain Pass and the Underdark. Lae’zel is obsessed with going to the Mountain Pass, since she wants to get to the Githyanki Creche, and Shadowheart wants to go to the Underdark to find the Nightsong. Well, both choices sound really interesting and most players will want to go through both. In this guide, we will tell you which to choose between the Mountain Pass and the Underdark in Baldur’s Gate 3, and what you can expect in both of them.
Which to Choose Between the Mountain Pass and the Underdark in BG3
There is no reason to choose to only go to either the Mountain Pass or the Underdark in BG3 because you can actually go through both. Though the game will give you a warning when you want to head to the Mountain Pass, you can actually go to both at the same time.
As you traveled between various Waypoints, you can still do this after you discover a Waypoint in both the Mountain Pass and Underdark, and you won’t actually lose out on any content if you do one before the other.
The only way you can lose out on doing one of them is if you go to Baldur’s Gate, which is Act 3. Even if you reach Moonrise Towers, which is Act 2, you can still come back to the previous regions, though many of the quests could be canceled by then.
Is the Mountain Pass a Point of No Return?
No, though the game warns you when you first want to enter the Mountain Pass, it is not a point of no return. The only thing that happens if you head to the Mountain Pass is that the plot with the Goblins and the Druids ends without your input.
So, if you want to head to the Mountain Pass, make sure to first finish the main plot in the first region of the game. Going into the Underdark won’t trigger the end of the Druid Grove plot, since you can get there by accident through around 4 entrances.
There are only two paths toward the Mountain Pass and one requires you to get past a powerful Githyanki patrol or past the Goblin Camp.
Which One to Explore First? Mountain Pass vs Underdark in BG3 – Act 1 Region Progression
The Underdark is a region with relatively weak enemies, making it the better choice in BG3 at the start. Once you finish everything there is to do in the Underdark, you can either go to the Grymforge or head over to the Mountain Pass.
The Mountain Pass can still be a bit harder than the Grymforge, but it is a good place to find Legendary loot.
Still, in general, if you want to get the full BG3 experience in Act 1 without having to backtrack, you should go through the regions in the following order:
- Underdark
- Grymforge (region accessible through the Underdark)
- Mountain Pass
- Shadow-Cursed Lands (region accessible through Grymforge and Mountain Pass)
The Shadow-Cursed Lands is where the Moonrise Towers are located and where Act 2 starts. Until then, both the Underdark, the Grymforge, and the Mountain Pass are still part of Act 1.
The moment you enter the Shadow-Cursed Lands, from either the Grymforge or the Mountain Pass, players might miss out on content from Act 1, as characters from that Act will move.
