When you travel through all the areas available for exploration in Baldur’s Gate 3, you often stumble upon strange situations. From a bugbear and ogre who desperately want privacy to Volo making up his own words to appease a goblin, there is no shortage of entertaining moments. There is one moment, however, that can result in regret if you don’t approach it right. We’re talking about another rescue mission in Baldur’s Gate 3 and how to save Baelen, a forgetful but endearing dwarf looking for mushrooms.
Where to Find Baelen in BG3
When playing Baldur’s Gate 3, knowing how to save Baelen means finding him and reacting properly. Start the quest to look for him by speaking to Derryth Bonecloak, a vendor spending time in the Myconid Colony. You’ll discover that it seems there’s no love lost between her and Baelen, though she still wants him back safely. This will kick off the “Find the Mushroom Picker” quest.
Baelen is to the west of the colony. You’ll have to leave the area from the southwest exit and head to the walkway located to the west. Climbing down the cliff will lead you to a field of Bibberbang (those annoying explosive fungi).
BG3 made it so that to save Baelen you’ll have to avoid rushing things like some players tend to do. They see the Bibberbang from a distance before they spot the mushroom picker.
Hastily, they then proceed to shoot one or two and a massive explosive follows. While it can be very satisfying to watch, this explosion will send Baelen straight into his next life and destroy all the Noblestalk in the area.
If you walk closer, you’ll start a conversation with the dwarf. He’ll explain that he is stuck in this field of Bibberbang and can’t move but needs his bag. Now you can think of a way to rescue him.
How to Save Baelen in BG3
There are a few ways BG3 lets you save Baelen, and you can choose the method you like most:
If you have Wyll in your party or you play as a Warlock, you can summon an imp to fly over to the bag and throw it to Baelen. He can use his Scrolls of Misty Step to get out of the dangerous location he’s in.
You can also use Mage Hand, which is available to many characters like Gale, Lae’zel, and Astarion (if he’s an Arcane Trickster). If you’re a wizard you can use this handy… hand as well. If you have Scroll of Misty Step yourself, you can throw it to Baelen, but you’ll have to choose your strongest character to throw it. You’ll need to pass a Strength check to successfully throw the scroll.
Alternatively, you can use Misty Step yourself, and help to get the bag to Baelen. Once you’ve gotten the bag in his hands, Baelen will thank you and give you a Scroll of Invisibility and head back to the Myconid Colony.
You can now carefully search for Noblestalk in the area. You’ll find this multi-talented mushroom on the east side of the Bibberbang field. Use the methods discussed above to reach and get the Noblestalk.
What to Do With the Noblestalk
Choosing who to give the Noblestalk to is up to you. You can hand it over to Derryth, after which you’ll receive the Gloves of Uninhibited Kushigo. If you want, you can feed it to Baelen, and he’ll no longer be as absent-minded or confused anymore. Note that this will lead to him becoming more aggressive towards Derryth. She won’t be happy with the situation.
If you have Shadowheart in your party, you can opt to give the Noblestalk to her instead. It will help her recover some of her memories.
