Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Save and Recruit Minsc

Baldur's Gate 3 How to Save and Recruit Minsc

Minsc is one of the most beloved characters in the Forgotten Realms. Along with his loyal companion, a ‘miniature giant space hamster’ called Boo, he has served as a great source of entertainment for those who enjoyed Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2. The duo makes an appearance in the third installment of the epic series, but getting them to your party isn’t as easy as you’d hope. Find out below how to save and recruit Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Where is Minsc Located in BG3?

Minsc is a human ranger from the distant land of Rashemen who has a cute little hamster as his best friend. He was a pretty important part of BG2, and seeing him in BG3 is a pleasant surprise. You only meet Minsc in Act 3, and he’s the last companion you’re able to recruit.

You’ll find Minsc hiding away in the Abandoned Cistern in the City Sewers after he escaped from the Counting House, which is where you meet him for the first time. You can’t recruit him after meeting him initially, this can only happen after the fight in the sewers.

To get to Minsc in the sewers, head to the western side and go beyond the Undercity Ruins. You’ll notice acid-covered pipes—follow them until you reach a hollowed-out pipe.

This leads to the main room of the Abandoned Cistern and that’s where you’ll find Minsc once again. When you reach this point in the game, you’ll also be able to complete your Counting House and Underduke quests.

How to Save and Recruit Minsc in BG3

Because of how he is written in Baldur’s Gate 3, to save Minsc and get him to join you, you must have recruited Jaheira at the end of Act 2. It’s a packaged deal.

Also note that you need to defeat Minsc in battle without actually ending his life. For this, you’ll have to use a non-lethal attack and no spells. To encounter Minsc, you’ll need to follow Jaheira’s ‘The Harper Commander Quest’.

Minsc is fooled by a fake Jaheira and is convinced that the real one is a ‘monster’. As such, he’ll fight alongside the Absolute’s cultists. There’s no way to avoid this battle, so prepare to use your non-lethal attack as soon as you’ve taken the other enemies down. Select this attack from your “Passive” tab.

Once you’ve knocked Minsc out, you’ll have to make the right choices in dialogue to save and recruit him in BG3. Jaheira will want to save him and the Emperor Mindflayer will think he isn’t good for your plans.

Here are the replies you must choose to make sure you can add Minsc to your party and save him in BG3:

  • “Extend your protection to him” / “Try to protect him. I must defy my urge.” (Dark Urge)
  • “He’s Jaheira’s friend. Do it.”
  • “I don’t think you want to find out” / “It doesn’t matter—help him.”

This will lead to Minsc bashing the cistern walls and when you follow him, you’ll get to meet Boo as well. At this point, you can recruit Minsc and Boo to your party for good.

What if Jaheira Died in Act 2?

In Baldur’s Gate 3, to save Minsc and add him to your party, you must keep Jaheira alive in Act 2. If things didn’t go so well and she died, you won’t be able to convince Minsc to join you, unfortunately.

What if Minsc Dies During the Battle?

If you don’t knock out Minsc and instead end him, you’ll not only miss out on his entertaining personality and the cuteness of Boo, but you’ll upset Jaheira as well. You can’t revive him or bring him back in some special way. Jaheira will permanently leave your party upon his death.

And that is all you need to know about how to save and recruit Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3. Check out other interesting BG3 guides and articles:
