What is the Difference Between Explorer vs Balanced Difficulty in Baldur’s Gate 3?

When players want to start their first Baldur’s Gate 3 playthrough, they will have to choose between Explorer, Balanced, and Tactician difficulty. Considering you don’t want an insanely hard experience, you will have to choose between Explorer and Balanced.

The easiest way to describe these two would be that Explorer is the easy difficulty for BG3 and Balanced is the normal one.

The Balanced difficulty doesn’t change anything to the game and gives you the experience exactly how the developers at Larian intended. However, that might be a bit too hard for players that aren’t used to RPGs and DnD rules.

Here are the exact differences between the Explorer vs Balanced modes in Baldur’s Gate 3, showing what makes Explorer difficulty much easier:

  • Enemies have -30% HP.
  • Players have extra 100% HP.
  • You have a higher accuracy when attacking enemies (+1 attack roll).
  • Traders give you discounted prices.
  • You get +2 proficiency at level 1.

In the Balanced difficulty, everything from above doesn’t exist and you get the game without any advantages. Tactician does exactly the opposite of Explorer, as it gives the AI advantages.

Usually, the best choice would be to play Balanced mode in BG3, as it will give you the best, polished experience, which most players will probably go through. However, if you have absolutely no experience with Larian games or DnD-type RPGs, then it wouldn’t be so bad to go through Explorer for your first run.

Little oversight in the guide. Every boost player gets from Explorer mode, enemy gets it too. So actually Explorer mode is harder for battles.

that makes no sense
