Baldur’s Gate 3: Can Scratch Die as a Familiar? Answered

Baldur’s Gate 3 Can Scratch Die as a Familiar Answered

There is nothing that players get more attached to than their fictional animal companions. Scratch and the Owlbear Cub are the only pets you can get in Baldur’s Gate 3, and the fear of losing one of them can be very overwhelming, considering you can summon Scratch as a Familiar to fight alongside you. Though you know that your companions will first fall to the ground when they lose all of their HP, what happens to poor Scratch? Is he safe from death? Well, in this guide, we will answer the question “Can Scratch die in Baldur’s Gate 3?”, allowing you to play without being constantly stressed about the pet’s livelihood.

Can Scratch die?

Yes, Scratch can die in the camp. However, he cannot die outside of the camp, as he isn’t actually there.

Can Scratch die if you summon him as a Familiar in BG3?

No, Scratch cannot die in BG3 if you summon him as a Familiar to fight by your side. If he gets defeated after you summon him, his Familiar self will disappear, but the real Scratch will still be at Camp. You can just summon him again as a Familiar after a Short Rest.

The only way Scratch can die in BG3 is if you attack him in Camp or you summon an enemy in the Camp that accidentally ends his life. So, as long as nothing hurts Scratch in the Camp, he is safe from death.

Otherwise, you can let him get defeated by any enemy during your playthrough in the “real” world without loading a previous save file, since he will still be alive and well at Camp.

How to summon Scratch as a Familiar in BG3

After a while of having Scratch in your Camp in BG3, he will come up to you with a ball in his mouth. If you pass an Ability Check or use the Speak with Animals spell you can get that ball from him, giving you the ability to summon him as a Familiar at least once per Short Rest.

If you give the ball to a different companion or place it in a chest, you will lose the ability to summon Scratch as a Familiar.

And that is all you need to know about if Scratch can die in Baldur’s Gate 3. Check out other interesting BG3 guides and articles:
