Going outside after 11 P.M. in Village in the Shade is a high-risk, high-reward situation. You may be able to find many rare items scattered around the village, but you’ll also have to face various yokai that will attack you unless you can solve their puzzles. One of the first yokai that players will encounter is Chochin Obake, which take the form of lantern ghosts who will patrol the village and attack any villagers they see. If you’re curious about how to make this yokai go away so you can roam around the night with ease, here is a guide on how to defeat the Chochin Obake in Village in the Shade.

How to Defeat Chochin Obake in Village in the Shade

On nights where Chochin Obake have spawned in the village, you’ll be spooked by a lantern-like ghost appearing right in front of you before vanishing. These yokai will roam the village with a blue cone of vision. AVOID stepping into their line of sight or they will become hostile and attack you. They are faster than you, so you’ll need to leave the village to de-agro them.

To defeat the Chochin Obake and make all of them leave the village for the night, you’ll need to find five shrines scattered around the village and break them with your pickaxe. These shrine are only visible while your flashlight is on, so keep it on all times at night. Below are the locations of each shrine you’ll need to break.

The first shrine is placed where the Street Vendor shop is during the daytime.

Next, make your way north to the road next to the Kusonoki Clinic. There will be a shrine near the Jizo Statues here.

After striking that statue, continue to make your way counter-clockwise around the village. You’ll find another shrine between the watermill and Nago’s house.

Sneak your way around the nearby ghosts, go through Yuta’s garden, and you’ll find another shrine to destroy just to the west of Yuta’s house

Finally, you’ll find the last shrine underneath a tree near Kiki Construction

Once you have destroyed every shrine, you’ll receive a notification that a new shrine has appeared somewhere. Make your way to the village’s central plaza and you’ll find a new, larger shrine. Strike it multiple times with your pickaxe and it will break, banishing all of the [name] from the village.

Inside of the broken shrine you’ll find your reward for defeating the yokai. The first time you defeat them, you’ll be rewarded with a scarecrow. Future defeats will reward you with either a decoration for your house, multiple magatamas, or several dorotabo seeds your you to plant.
