The main feature which separates Village in the Shade from other games in the farming genre is the various yokai encounters that the player will need to brave through at night. Venturing into the village at night can be very rewarding at you’ll be able to pick up various magatamas and other rare items scattered on the ground, but there will also be a difficult boss enemy chasing you down. The first and most common of these encounters, and thus a tutorial enemy of sorts, is the Daruma Doll. This menacing doll might not do much damage, but if you want to explore without an enemy breathing down your neck you’ll need to solve its puzzle. How to Defeat the Daruma Doll in Village in the Shade
When entering the village on a night where the Daruma Doll has spawned, you’ll notice that the entire village is filled with stones that you can break with your pickaxe. Once you step foot in the village, a giant read Daruma Doll will fall from the sky and begin to chase you.
Your normal running speed is much faster than the Daruma and it can’t navigate around the stones like you can, so it’s not much of a threat while running after you. The real threat here is the Daruma’s eye. Every thirty seconds or so, the Daruma will begin to chant “The Daruma Doll Fell Down” and unleash a red spot effect on your screen. Moving at all while this effect is around will damage you, so make sure you stand still!
To defeat the Daruma Doll, you’ll need to find a stone in the village which looks different from all the others. Most of the stones are a pure white and can be broken by your pickaxe. The stone you’ll need to find is cracked with a more brown-ish center than the others. This stone will spawn in a random location each night, so you’ll need to get lucky to find it.
You will be unable to break this strange stone with your pickaxe normally. However, when the Daruma’s eye opens after his chant this stone will transform into a black daruma doll as pictured below.
While the stone has been transformed into a black Daruma Doll, strike it with your pickaxe and the large red Daruma Doll will be defeated. Once the large Daruma Doll disappears, your reward will spawn inside of the broken smaller doll.
The first time you defeat the Daruma Doll, you’ll be rewarded with a scarecrow. Defeating it again on another night will earn you either a house decoration, multiple magatamas, or several dorotabo seeds.
