Village in the Shade is a game that gives the player a few vague hints on how to accomplish their goals or make themselves stronger, but for the most part you’re thrown into the world and expected to learn every secret the village has to offer on your own. One way to learn how to deal with the nightly yokai encounters is to read about them in the library, however all of the books relating to them have gone missing and you’ll need to find and return them to the library yourself before you can read them. If you’re having trouble finding any of these invaluable collectibles, here is a full guide on where to find all Lost Books in Village in the Shade.
All Lost Book Locations in Village in the Shade
You’ll be able to begin collecting Lost Books mid-way through the Rule 3 quests, after Nago fully moves into his roll as the village librarian. Lost Books will only spawn at night and appear slightly different from other collectibles as they have a red shine to them.
NOTE: Do NOT attempt to look for Lost Books on nights when the Tengu open their stores in the village, seemingly due to the way own their red candle items work no Lost Books will spawn in the village itself on nights when the Tengu are active.
Not every Lost Book will spawn at the same time, as most of them are tied to various yokai encounters and main story plot points. For example, there are two Lost Books tied to the Daruma Doll yokai event. If you have never encountered the Daruma Doll, neither of these books will spawn in the village. Luckily, you will not need to defeat any yokai to obtain the Lost Books related to them as the purpose of the books is to guide you through those encounters on future attempts.
While the spawn conditions for every book are not currently know, through various test we can at least confirm that the spawn locations are consistent in all playthroughs. As such, below we have listed every Lost Book spawn location in Village in the Shade.
1 – The Mystical Nature of Peaches
After buying the Deer Hunting License, make your way all the way to the top of the mountains at night and you’ll find this book.
2 – Izanagi’s Imperial Decree
After the main story, return to the Chasm and you’ll find this book placed directly in front of it.
3 – The Origins of Kagatsu Village
This book can be found in the small outcove to the west of the Mountain Pass.
4 – The Fugitive Lord
This book spawns on top of a grave on the left side of the cemetery.
5 – The Calamity-Quelling Sacrifice
You’ll find this next book right next to Nago’s house.
6 – The Fate of the Unbeliever
This books spawns on the road between your farm and the Hunting Lodge.
7 – The Soporific Peaches
You’ll find the next book in the northwestern outcove of the village, where the fox’s Autumn shrine spawns
8 – The God from Above
Make your way to the cemetery at night and you’ll find this book on one of the graves.
9 – The Tale of the Nameless Village
The Nameless book spawns on the bridge between your house and the village.
10 – Half-Torn Book
After the main story, make your way to the Kiki Manor backyard (You’ll need to enter the underground passage from the chasm to return here) and you’ll find a book placed in front of the sealing stone.
11 – The Demon’s Striped Cloth
To get this book you’ll need to go through the first tunnel in the mountain pass, it’s placed by some grass right outside of it.
12 – The Demon’s Miraculous Song
The Song book can be found near the entrance to the Haunted Forest at the top of the mountains.
13 – The Demon’s Rockrending Machete
Make your way to the Quarry Fishing Spot to pick up this book.
14 – The Which Brings Wealth
This book spawns on the path leading to the cemetery.
15 – Gone with the Grotesque
This book is wedged in the small area in front of Yuta’s house.
16 – Article about a House Fire
The Fire book spawns next to the burned down house in the Haunted Forest after the story events which take place there.
17 – Old Diary Entry
You’ll have to go to the Haunted Thicket to pick up this book. To reach it, head left once after the entrance and then head northeast once. It’s underneath some bushes to prevent you from seeing it. We have created a map of the Thicket to assist you in finding the book here.
18 – Article about a Serial Murder
The Murder book can be found next to the Waterfall Fishing Spot.
19 – The Night-Mooing Bovine
This book is hidden directly next to the lumberjack hut behind the Hunting Lodge.
20 – The Rodent’s Riches
The Rodent book can be found near the Kusonoki Clinic.
21 – The Devote Kitsune
The Kitsune book can be found by the bridge overlooking the Crossroads Fishing Spot.
22 – The Fool’s Gold
You’ll find the Fool’s Gold book on the road to the east of the Village Creek Fishing Spot.
23- The Lord of Pond
This next book is on the road to the north of the Mountain Pass.
24 – The Enticing Lamplight
You’ll find this book on the path leading to the Quarry.
25 – Call of the Daruma Doll
The Daruma Book can be found next to the Hunting Lodge.
26 – Oral Lore: The Black Figure
This books spawns near a tree on the road between your home and the Hunting Lodge.
27 – The Earth-Lurking Snake
This book spawns directly in front of Kiki Manor.
28 – The Light of Life
The next book can be found near the glowing stone to the south of the village.
29 – The Sedge-Hatted Monster
This book can be found in the outcove directly south of the path that leads to Piro’s grave.
30 – Oral Lore: The Woman in White
After buying the Deer Hunting License, make your way to the area of the mountains it unlocks and you’ll find this book waiting for you.
31 – The Juvenile Guardians
After purchasing the Bear Hunting License, make your way to the bear area of the mountains at night to pick up this book.
32 – The Child Spirited Away
This next book is behind the guest house at the Kiki Manor.
33 – Last Will and Testament
This book spawns in the small corner by Kiki Construction.
34 – The Vow Unto a Demon
The Vow books appears by a tree near the restaurant at the entrance to the village.
35 – Endemic Disease Report
This book appears directly in front of where Street Vendor spawns during the day, at night.
36 – The Sacrificial Ritual
You’ll find this book on the road leading to the Okami Pond fishing spot.
37 – The Wish Upon a Demon
You’ll need to buy the third piece of farmland to grab this book as it’s on the stairs between your home and that land.
38 – You Saw Me, I See You
You’ll find this book on the road next to Kisuke’s House.
39 – The One-Eyed Daruma
The One-Eyed book is located on the road south of the Waterwheel.
40 – The Tale of the Black Mist
The Mist book spawns by the chairs near the central plaza, it seemingly only spawns on nights when Hyakume are active.
41 – The Earthripping Serpent
This book is placed on the village’s northeastern road.
42 – The Masked Candle Seller
This book spawns in the corner behind Kiki Construction.
43 – The Jizo and the Rainbogey
The Rainbogey book appears by the Village Creek Fishing spot, but it only spawns on rainy nights.
44 – Mother and Babe in the Snow
The Snow book is located directly in front of Sumire’s home.
45 – Fujin, Raijin, and the Turtle
This book spawns in the Kiki Manor yard, but only on nights when Fujin and Raijin are attacking you.
46 – The God from Below
You’ll need to buy the third piece of farmland to grab this book as it’s on the path that leads to the broken bridge.
47 – Village Head’s Journal
This book is very hard to spot but you can find it on the small path by the Kiki Manor warehouse.
48 – The Giant Daikon
This book spawns by some trees near the Hunting Lodge.
49 – Notice of Code Amendment
This book spawns just below the bridge leading from your house to the chasm path.
50 – The Young Woman’s Secret
This book spawns in the Fox Hunting area of the mountains.
51 – The One-Way Mountain Pass
The One Way Mountain Pass book naturally spawns in front of the entrance to the Mountain Pass.
52 – Code Update Notice
You’ll be able to grab this book in the mountains after you’ve purchased the Boar Hunting License.
53 – The Missing Treasure
One of the hardest books to find is Treasure, as it is one of two books which is located inside of the Haunted Thicket. We have created a map of the Thicket which you can use to find the book
54 – The Traveler’s Granted Wish
The Traveler book can be found on the path directly behind your house
55 – The Nightly Echoing Footfalls
You’ll find this book near the eastern edge of the Mountain Pass.
