Valve’s Team Fortress 2 (TF2) is facing a surge of negative reviews on Steam, amassing over 10,000 negative reviews in the last 48 hours. This sudden backlash, which began on June 3, is largely driven by the game’s severe bot problem and perceived neglect from Valve. The community is rallying under hashtags like #FIXTF2 and #SaveTF2, emphasizing the dire need for intervention.

The bot issue in TF2 is twofold. First, there are tens of thousands of idling bots operating the game in text mode to farm item drops, which are then sold in bulk by a small number of individuals controlling these bot farms. Secondly, there are also cheating bots that infest the actual game servers, disrupting gameplay and rendering the game nearly unplayable for genuine players.

Veteran TF2 players, many of whom have devoted thousands of hours to the game, are expressing profound frustration. These reviews highlight the stark contrast between the community’s enduring affection for the game and its current, untenable state.

The predominant sentiment among the negative reviews is one of neglect by Valve. Despite promises made in 2022 to address these ongoing issues, players feel their concerns have gone unanswered. As a result, there are calls to boycott in-game purchases until Valve takes meaningful action.

Suggested solutions from the community include enhanced anti-cheat measures and increased server moderation. While some players have migrated to community-run servers to escape the bot issue, this is viewed as a temporary fix rather than a sustainable solution.

The review bombing is more than an outcry of dissatisfaction; it represents a heartfelt plea from a dedicated community seeking to restore a cherished game to its former glory. The responsibility now lies with Valve to heed this overwhelming feedback and take significant steps to resolve the game’s critical issues.
