On December 1, 2023, Capcom released the Outfit 3 costume for each launch character in Street Fighter 6. Fans of the game have been waiting months for the new DLC outfits to release, with Capcom having slowly revealed the outfits over the course of the year.
Unfortunately, what should have been a widely praised release has instead been mired in controversy. Gamers around the world agree that these costumes are overpriced to the point where they can hardly be considered a “micro”-transaction.
Each costume in the Outfit 3 pack will cost players 300 Fighters Coins, getting all 12 outfits will cost 3,600 coins in total. To purchase Fighters Coins players will need to spend real money on Fighters Coin packs. The cheapest of these packs is 250 coins for $5.
Putting this math together, to buy a single one of the Outfit 3 costumes in Street Fighter 6, players will need to spend a minimum of $10. To buy every single costume in the pack, you would need to spend an outrageous price of $106.
This absurd pricing has caused many games to accuse Capcom of scamming their customers. Especially as this new controversy comes right off the heels of a previous one where Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles costumes for their online avatars cost Street Fighter 6 players $15 dollars worth of Fighters Coins.
Fighting Game cosmetic microtransactions have been a common subject of controversy this generation. With games like Mortal Kombat 1 and Dead of Alive 6 facing very similar controversies with their costume DLCs.
With this being the second time Capcok has faced a pricing controversy with Street Fighter 6, it’s unlikely any backlash will change the publisher’s mind on these costume prices. Gamers can only hope that in the future they’ll price these cosmetics better.
Street Fighter 6 is currently available to purchase on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and on PC via Steam.
