The highly anticipated remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR), featuring the rise and fall (and potential resurgence) of Revan, has left gamers and fans in a state of uncertainty. Released in 2003 for Xbox, the original KOTOR garnered universal acclaim, boasting a 94 Metacritic score and a 90 user rating, solidifying its place as one of the best RPGs of all time.
The announcement of a remake at the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, complete with a teaser trailer, generated immense excitement. However, three years later, a lack of updates and conflicting reports have fueled speculation about delays, development issues, and even cancellation.

The project’s rocky journey began with Aspyr Media’s reported removal from development in 2022, with Saber Interactive taking over. Yet, reports from gaming journalists like Jeff Grubb suggest development has effectively ceased, despite assurances from parent company Embracer Group. Further fueling speculation, the game’s trailer was removed from PlayStation’s official website and social media, with Sony citing music licensing issues as the reason, a statement that failed to quell fan concerns.

Embracer Group’s lack of transparency regarding the project’s status, coupled with its recent financial struggles—including a collapsed $2 billion acquisition deal and approximately 900 employee layoffs—has cast a long shadow over the remake’s future.
While Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier cited sources within Saber Interactive suggesting ongoing work, the conflicting reports and Embracer’s financial instability have left fans frustrated and uncertain about the game’s future.
The CEO’s intentionally vague statements only exacerbate the uncertainty surrounding this highly anticipated remake of a beloved Star Wars RPG. Ultimately, the remake’s status—should it ever be released—rests solely on an official statement from one of the companies involved.
Until then, We can only hope the project is merely on hold rather than cancelled outright, clinging to the possibility of one day experiencing this highly anticipated return to the Star Wars universe.
