No, this isn’t a poorly timed April Fools joke. BN Pictures has announced a 20th anniversary anime project for the ever popular SGT. Frog franchise (Known as Keroro Gunso in Japan).

Keroro Gunso began as a manga in Monthly Shonen Ace magazine in 1999 and ran until September of 2013, when the franchise was adapted into an anime in 2004 it quickly became an international icon. It felt like you couldn’t go anywhere online in the mid-2000s to early-2010s without seeing that frog somewhere.

The franchise’s cultural spark unfortunately ended soon after its anime and manga ended and it felt like time had moved beyond Keroro Gunso, until today that is. As it appears that Keroro Gunso will be rising again in 2024, the 20th anniversary of the anime!

The announcement came from the official Keroro Gunso Twitter page almost immediately as the clocks struck April 1st in Japan. Those following the account were greeted by an animated trailer announcing the 20th anniversary project, with Sergeant Keroro greeting these familiar characters we haven’t seen in years.

There are currently no further details about this 20th anniversary project aside from the Twitter announcement and a link to the official Keroro Gunso website for more information.

Now while all of this may sound like an April Fools joke designed to tug at the heartstrings of fans who have been in love with this anime for a decade, the truth of the matter goes deeper than that. In fact, the original tweet announcing this project proclaims it is real in the hashtags it uses.

While the timing of the announcement coming on April Fools days is suspicious at first, one must also look at the surrounding context. According to the Twitter account, there has been a nonstop marathon of all 358 Keroro Gunso episodes occurring in Japan, with the announcement of this 20th anniversary project coinciding with when that marathon reached the series’ 7th season!

All signs point to that yes, this is in fact a real project. So sit back and prepare as Sergeant Keroro will inevitably take back his rightful place as a cultural icon.
