Old School RuneScape has many profitable or helpful skills for players to develop over the course of their gameplay. Few skills are quite as useful as Fishing, however. Not only is it an incredible source of much-needed food for the raring adventurer, but it is also an immensely profitable skill once players reach higher levels. Jagex introduced a ‘shift drop’ function to items in 2017, which allowed players to quickly drop items from their inventory, thus maximizing productivity. Since then, Fishing has become ever more popular and enjoyable among the community. We’ve compiled an OSRS 1-99 Fishing guide so you can get your biggest catch to date quickly!

The Ultimate OSRS Fishing Guide

Fishing is, for the most part, fairly straightforward in OSRS. Players must gather the appropriate equipment and/or bait, and fish for specific creatures in spots all around Gielinor. These can be fairly safe, such as the humble shrimp in Lumbridge, or in the dangers of the Wilderness.

Levels 1-20: Starting Off

When players leave Tutorial Island, they should be left with a small fishing net. This is all players need to kickstart their Fishing journey in OSRS.

There is a Small Fishing Net area north of Lumbridge, along the coast by the swamp, which allows players to fish for Shrimp. These do not offer much experience (10XP per Shrimp) but are easy to catch and cook at the fire nearby, offering some handy Cooking experience at the same time.

When players hit Level 15, they have a chance of catching Anchovies instead of Shrimp, which offer 40 experience each; a considerable upgrade. To progress from level 1-15, players must catch approximately 252 Shrimp, and it will take 52 Anchovies to go from level 15-20.

Levels 20-35: Fly Fishing

When players hit Level 20 Fishing, the best option at hand is to take up Fly Fishing. To do this, players must obtain a Fly Fishing Rod from either the Grand Exchange or one of the Fishing shops scattered around Gielinor, such as the one in Port Sarim. They should also purchase feathers to use as bait for the Trout they will be catching.

From Level 20 to 30, players will only be able to catch Trout at Fly Fishing spots, offering 50 Fishing experience per catch. From Level 30 onwards, players will also have a chance of catching Salmon which offer 70 Fishing experience each.

This is the best and quickest Fishing experience in the game for Free To Play players and is highly regarded as an excellent training method.

Levels 35-99: Tempoross

If players are looking for the quickest and easiest methods to reach 99, then Tempoross is the way forward. Tempoross is a skill minigame that comes in the form of fighting a water spirit in a controlled instance, where players must work together to overcome it.

Players can beat Tempoross by fishing for Harpoonfish and then firing them at Tempoross by using the cannons provided on the two ships in the instance.

It’s a rather simple minigame that can easily accelerate players to level 99, while also potentially giving them a Dragon Harpoon through the loot table.

Should players wish, there are two methods by which they can train at Tempoross. The first is purely for receiving Fishing experience, in which players simply catch the fish and load them into the cannons to fire at Tempoross.

The other method is to also cook the fish on fires, which provides them with Cooking experience and also more points in order to access higher reward tables.

OSRS 1-99 Fishing Guide Alternate Methods

While the above methods are considered amongst the best to reach level 99 Fishing in OSRS, there are certainly other ways to reach the highest heights. We won’t cover them all in this guide, but here are some of the most popular alternate methods.

From level 58, players can unlock Barbarian Fishing which offers high rates of both Fishing and Agility exp. It is an excellent choice for those who like to earn their XP while AFK, opting for a lower yet easier method of reaching level 99 Fishing.

Another solid alternative for hitting 99 Fishing requires 44 Hunter, 47 Fishing, and the completion of Bone Voyage to begin. From there, players can utilize Fossil Island to go Drift Net Fishing, which offers both Fishing and Hunter experience at the same time. It is the most efficient way to level both skills simultaneously, and is actually rather fun!

A ‘simpler’ method for players who have achieved Level 40 Fishing is simply fishing for Lobsters in Catherby, which is an incredibly low-effort task that offers a steady amount of Fishing experience.

The Family Crest quest must be completed prior to this, but it does not take much time and is worth the effort. From Catherby, players can fish for Lobsters in the water, cook them at the range, and then deposit them in the Bank; these are all in a straight line from each other.

OSRS Quests That Offer Fishing Experience

Not only is chasing the catch of the day an effective method for leveling up the Fishing Skill in OSRS but there are also several simple (and not so simple) quests that offer a hefty amount of Fishing experience to help players along the way. Most of them have few requirements, making them ideal for new players. Here are some of the best:

  • Fishing Contest; This simple and delightful quest throws our hero in the midst of a Fishing contest in order to win a trophy for a Dwarf. The other contestant is not what you would expect! Fishing Contest in OSRS has a simple requirement of 10 Fishing and offers a reward of 2,437 XP for completion, which is a large amount at lower levels.
  • Sea Slug; This curious quest is the beginning of the Sea Slug series, and has a simple requirement of 30 Firemaking to begin. In it, players must investigate a shipping platform that is plagued with a mysterious fate. For helping the villagers, players will receive a reward of 7,125 Fishing XP and access to the Fishing Platform.
  • Swan Song; This quest for hardened quest veterans has a requirement of 100 Quest Points, 66 Magic, 63 Cooking, 45 Smithing, 42 Firemaking, 40 Crafting, and 62 Fishing. In it, players follow the Wise Old Man for one last adventure and receive 50,000 Fishing XP for helping him on his way.

And that is all you need to know about Fishing in OSRS. Check out other interesting OSRS guides and articles:
