On February 24, 2026, Square Enix released a new PC version of the classic Playstation One RPG Final Fantasy VII to Steam. This port of the game would include features seen in other recent PC Final Fantasy ports like the ability to enable 3x gameplay speeds and the option to turn off random battle encounters.
Final Fantasy VII has a long history of unsatisfying PC ports which tend to look graphically worse than the original title, have glaring audio issues, and overall are hard to recommend playing. While not many expected this new port to be an improvement over playing the original PlayStation One version, fans hoped it would at least be better than the previous port.
Unfortunately, gamers would not be able to immediately judge whether this new version of the classic game would be worth playing as attempting to download the game from Steam instead installs an empty folder titled “FINAL FANTASY VII STEAM EDITION” without a single file inside of it.

While one would be forgiven for assuming that this was an error on their end, many users on social media platforms such as Reddit and BlueSky have been reporting this issue. The exact reason for this lack of a download is complicated and has to do with the way this game released.
Because this version of Final Fantasy VII will be replacing the original version, being gifted to those who purchased that version for free, it should have been a download to replace that version. However the package for that was not added on the steam backend, causing it to download only an empty folder.
Thankfully, this means that the very few gamers in existence who do not own any version of Final Fantasy VII can buy and play this version without any issues, as this strange Steam glitch will only effect those who already own the original 2013 port of the game.
UPDATE: This issue has now been fixed, however the port is still filled with errors such as battles running at double speed even when the speedup function is turned off and framerate issues.
Final Fantasy VII is currently available for purchase for PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One devices.
