On the morning of May 12, 2024, famed leaker Midori took to Twitter with a very odd tweet. Stating that Nintendo was currently working on a new project with the codename U-King-O. This tweet quickly sent people online into a frenzy of speculation.
While Midori has leaked Nintendo project codenames in the past, such as when she leaked a project with the name Banquet, this is the first time that one of these codenames has been directly related to a past Nintendo project. The project codename for 2017’s hit game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was U-King.
In the past, whenever Nintendo would port old games they would add a suffix to the project name. Such as adding -S to games being ported to the Nintendo Switch and -C to games being ported to the Nintendo 3DS. Following this principle, it’s likely that the suffix -O refers to a port to the next major Nintendo console.
With the possibility that this is a port of Breath of the Wild to the Nintendo Switch’s successor console, people have naturally begun to speculate what this could mean. Will this be an enhanced port with all the DLC included? Would a Switch 2 Breath of the Wild port run at 60FPS? At the moment there is little to speculate on.
The one fear people have about such a port existing is the possibility that the Nintendo Switch’s successor console won’t be backwards compatible with Switch games. As the Nintendo Switch itself was unable to play games made for the Wii U, the first console Breath of the Wild released on.
These fears are hopefully unfounded as in the past Nintendo’s president assured shareholders that the roadblock of compatibility between Wii U and the Nintendo Switch will not be a concern for the company going forward.
Until future news about this project comes to light, gamers will have to sit and wait patiently for the official reveal of the Nintendo Switch’s successor. Which hopefully won’t be too long as in a recent tweet Nintendo’s president revealed it would be announced within the current fiscal year.
