Bethesda Softworks has yet to officially reveal Fallout 5, but we’re aware the award-winning studio is working on it to some degree and it will be next in line after The Elder Scrolls. However, this means it’s a long way away from hitting the store shelves, or is it?

If we believe Xbox insider Jez Corden, Microsoft wants to fast-track development on Fallout 5.

In a recent The Xbox Two Podcast episode, Corden claims Xbox is “aware” of the growing demand for more Fallout, especially following the premiere of the first season of the live-action adaptation on Prime Video.

While Microsoft certainly has the resources and incentive to make Fallout 5 a priority, it’s still unclear how ZeniMax Media’s owners will make it happen.

Bethesda Director Emil Pagliarulo recently revealed that Bethesda doesn’t have the capacity to work full-time on multiple projects simultaneously. After Starfield, the studio’s focus is on The Elder Scrolls 6.

Two ways Xbox can speed up the development of Fallout 5 is to give Bethesda a larger budget to expand and house two teams working on two AAA projects simultaneously. Converse, Xbox can also assign the mainline installment to a different studio.

If a different studio works on Fallout 5, it would make it the first mainline installment that isn’t by Bethesda since purchasing the rights from its former owners, Interplay, in 2007.

Which Studio Should Work on Fallout 5?

If Microsoft wants Fallout 5 to be as successful as every mainline entry before it, it needs to have Todd Howard.

Todd Howard has played a key role in the success of Bethesda’s best games. He was also an executive producer on the live-action Fallout series, which was recently renewed for a second season.

But, with Howard hinting at retiring after The Elder Scrolls 6, he might need more persuading.

With that said, Microsoft can afford to hire the right people to make sure Fallout 5 lives up to the expectations. The tech giant would also prefer to have the long-time Bethesda executive on board to prevent backlash and make sure the sequel aligns with Howard’s vision for the series.

In an ideal world, Microsoft will bring in Chris Avellone, now cleared of sexual misconduct and harassment allegations, to write Fallout 5. The influential video game creator was a designer on Fallout 2 and the project lead on Fallout: New Vegas, a spin-off developed by Obsidian Entertainment.
