Village in the Shade is far from a difficult game as there is no true game over state and dying will just mean that you need to wait another day before you can complete your current task. However, that doesn’t make it any less frustrating when a deer in the woods decides it wants to jump on you and take away all three of your hearts at once. Thankfully, there is a method of increasing your maximum HP in this game, it’s just a well hidden one. How to Increase Your Maximum HP in Village in the Shade
While running around the village you’ve more likely than not have passed by the Waterfall Fishing spot at Okami Pond. Next to this fishing spot there will be a sign instructing you to bring any malformed crops or fish to Konno. This is your first clue for increasing your HP, but first you’ll need to get some of the malformed crops in question.
To grow cursed crops, you’ll need to find and plant dorotabo seeds. These seeds spawn on the ground in the village and surrounding areas at night, and are also occasionally dropped in packs of 10 by yokai encounters if you’ve defeated the same creature multiple times per season (For example, beating the Daruma doll 4+ times in spring).
When planting the dorotabo seeds on your farm, they’ll seemingly take the form of random crops (which is why you should plant them early in the season just in case they become something that will take weeks to grow). However, once they are ready to be harvested they’ll be transformed into “Cursed” crops which deal 1/4 of a heart of damage to you when you pluck them from the ground.
Cursed Fish work slightly differently from cursed crops. If you fish at any fishing spot at night, you will find no normal fish and mostly just reel in trash. However, there is always a small chance that you’ll reel in a Cursed Fish instead. Each of the game’s fishing spots has one unique cursed fish to reel in.
Once you have gathered at least one cursed crop or fish, head to the village and speak to Konno with at least one cursed crop in your inventory and he’ll give you some advice about what to do with them. According to him, if one were to throw these cursed crops into Okami Pond after midnight, something special will happen.
Now that you know what to do with the crops, wait until the next nighttime haunting and make your way to Okami Pond. Here there will be a button prompt instructing you to throw your cursed crops into the pond as an offering.
NOTE: You will be unable to make these offerings before getting Konno’s advice about the cursed crops.
Once you have thrown in enough crops, a large fish deity will rise from the pond and give you one of his scales, each scale you get will increase your maximum heart count by one. You can increase you maximum health to eight hearts by making offerings here, however, each offering will require more cursed crops to be offered than the last.
