Mayu Amakura has always been one of the most intriguing characters in survival horror history, with her relationship with her sister being the driving force of the game’s plot and a frequent subject of debate among fans. Thankfully, the Fatal Frame 2 remake gives her some extra screen time via a Side Story that unlocked during a third playthrough of the game. While requiring that many playthroughs might sound exhausting, it is more than worth the effort. Mayu Amakura Side Story Walkthrough
In order to start Mayu Amakura’s Side Story you must first complete the Kusabi’s Side Story in order to obtain the Kusabi’s Sparkling Spirit Stone and earn the Abyss ending. After doing that, you will be given a new Side Story during your next New Game+ run to take Mayu to the Heavenly Bridge.
This can only be done during the short period of time between escaping the Tachibana House with Maya but before going to the Old Tree. Make your way to the bridge that connect the Kiryu House to the Tachibana House and you’ll get a new interaction with Mayu where she thinks about the day she fell. Take her picture and then enter the Tachibana House, there you will find a letter directing you to go to Ukishima.
If you are unaware of this area, it is a small island to the right of the Kurosawa House’s bridge, it can be reached via using your Exposure Lens to repair the small bridge leading to it. Once you reach the island, make your way to one of the trees and you’ll find a film reel. That means we need to make our way back to the Kiryu House to see what was filmed.
Once you’re in the Kiryu House, insert the film reel into the projector and wait until Mayu’s dialogue finishes. She will talk about how she has seen the Abyss before and your objective will change to the vague statement “Peer into Mayu’s Dream”.
Progress the plot until you enter the Old Tree with Mayu, when you do she will pass out due to her leg hurting. While she is passed out you’ll notice that you can touch her, which will activate a cutscene where you get a glimpse of Mayu’s dream and the Abyss
When the cutscene ends you will be automatically granted Mayu’s Sparkling Spirit Stone, which is one of two items you need to get the Sprouting Wings ending. The other item cam be obtained in Sae Kurosawa’s second Side Story.
