Warfare is usually the most interesting thing in Paradox Games, as it allows the player to mess around with the mechanics and make the most overpowered armies in the world. In Victoria 3, there is no single “best” army composition, as it depends on various factors such as your nation’s technology level, resources, and strategic goals. Still, based on the game mechanics and player experiences, here are some effective army composition strategies.
General Composition Guidelines
- Maintain at least 50% Infantry: Armies are expected to have a minimum of 50% Infantry units to avoid organization penalties.
- Balance with Artillery and Cavalry: The remaining 50% can be split between Artillery and Cavalry, depending on your needs and resources.
Unit Roles
- Infantry: Provides staying power, contributes most to Organization and Manpower.
- Artillery: Increases Kill Rate, especially effective in defense. Inflicts more casualties on the enemy.
- Cavalry: Improves the likelihood of capturing territory after winning offensive battles.
Specific Best Compositions
- Attack Force:
- 50% Infantry / 50% Artillery
This composition is effective for main attack armies, especially after discovering Shrapnel Artillery. For great powers, you can aim to go for 100 divisions armies, and for smaller ones somewhere around 60.
- Defensive Force:
- 90% Infantry / 10% Artillery
This setup is ideal for defensive positions and holding territory. Set the generals to Adamant Defense and you can bring the main offensive army to push once the enemy army loses most of its manpower. The little artillery will be useful for that extra kill rate.
- Naval Invasion Force:
- 50% Infantry / 50% Cavalry
This composition speeds up landing and occupation during naval invasions. With over 30% cavalry, you get access to the Rapid Advance order, which will make conquests extremely fast on undefended fronts.
