Is there anything more important than companions in an RPG? We spend hours with them roaming around the world, and we might as well know our options beforehand, if the other solution is restarting the game 5 times to know what we’ve got. In this guide I’ve listed all of the starting companions, alongside their stats and specializations, so you know which background you’re more likely to choose, and what else you can get along the way in Swordhaven: Iron Conspiracy.

Disclaimer: I’ve only written down the starting companions, will add the other ones as I advance through the game.

All Starting Companions

Based on your background, you will get one out of 5 potential companions for a big part of the early playthrough.

Fiona (Noble)

With a lot of points invested in Attention and Dexterity, Fiona seems to be the ranged-rogue default option. Her highest skill stat is in Ranged Weapons and you can easily make her excellent in all of the rogue skills (Stealth, Lockpicking, Pickpocketing).

She also has a unique skill, Fight Song, which increases Damage dealt by allies. Take her if you’re going to make a melee-focused character.

Nicodemus (Adventurer)

Biggest attribute is his Intellect, which can help him develop in whichever way you want with those extra skill points per level, with all around decent stats. He’s horrible for ranged combat and has a predisposed affinity to Martial Arts. You can roughly define him as a healer-monk.

He has a unique skill, Lore of the Land, which 100% guaranteed heal 26 HP, which a 50 turn cooldown. An amazing support skill. Take him if you want a good support character at your side.

Gyntar (Waidellot)

With high Strength and Dexterity, Gyntar is the perfect melee fighter for your priest build. He literally has no other skills besides his high Blunt skill, and has the attribute spread made perfectly to just leave him on the frontlines in front of everyone. Best RPG description for him would be fighter/paladin.

His unique skill, Healing Hands, allows Gyntar to remove negative effects from any creature. Take him if you want a melee fighter to keep you safe.

Nostra (Bandit)

With a spear in hand, Nostra is a crowd control type that keeps enemies at bay. Her attributes make her good at getting almost assured hits that penetrate most armors. Besides that, she can also focus on Outdoorsmanship and Stealth if you want her to be helpful on the side.

Her unique skill, Mugger’s Slash, deals +15% extra damage and gives you 0 to 33 coins. Good for full team or a close-ranged player.

Jemmahor (Merchant)

Your most basic fighter of the bunch. You get good stats for melee combat and a sword. Not much else on the side though. The perfect fighter for a smart or charismatic player.

His unique ability, Revel in Blood, restores HP by dealing damage in a 1:2 ratio. He’s a your go-to if you need a bodyguard for your sweet-talking ways.

Slaver’s Camp Companion

Budukeid

You can recruit Budukeid after being captured while leaving Clemreach. If you avoided that, you can find him in the Slavers’ Camp north of Swordhaven. He’s a monk-style character (Martial Arts) with high Lockpicking, Crafting, and Medicine. In theory, if you don’t care about free healing, he’s a better Nicodemus.

His unique ability, Boulder Man, increases Shield Block chance by +50%. This means you’ve got a tanky melee fighter with a lot of good side skills that can likely be a big part of the team.

Grainhold Companions

In Grainhold you’ll find the Bailiff investigating a murder, keeping two men in cages. Solve the quest by talking to the people involved. For Eres you’ll need to talk to the bard in the inn and for Kedarain you’ll need to talk to Ozka. At then end you’ll get to choose between the two who you want as a companion.

If you don’t solve the problem by just talking to Ozka, talk to Koriat to the west of Ozka to learn the witness is lying, then come back and learn the mother is blind and deaf to prove Kedarain is innocent.

Eres

Decent companions skills (Lockpicking, Pickpocketing, Crafting, and Medicine) and skill with a dagger. If you want your companions to also be useful outside of combat, Eres is the better choice. His 6 in Attention will also be useful in spotting some traps here and there.

His unique ability, Come Get Me, provokes enemies to come and attack him.

Kedarain

Just a normal melee sword fighter. You can make him a very powerful tank and mule that can carry your stuff. If you’ve already got someone specialized in Lockpicking, then Kedarain is a solid choice.

His unique ability, Hurt Me Plenty, gives him increased damage for 3 turns, but lowers his accuracy.

Temporary Companions

These are companions that you can only get for a short stretch of time, likely attached to a region.

Treniota (Clemreach)

After getting the Uninvited Guests quest from the village headman, you can talk to Treniota right outside the house to recruit him while you’re still in the Clemreach / Lonely Shore area. Once you exit the area, he’ll leave your party.
