At 2:56 PM on March 12, 2024, Sega suddenly dropped a surprise announcement that they would be releasing a new entry in their world-famous Puyo Puyo franchise: Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop!
This new entry in the Puyo franchise will feature the classic Puyo Puyo gameplay and over 24 playable characters from across the franchise’s history.
In the trailer, we see brief glimpses of several game modes such as a classic adventure mode, timed battles, endurance matches, mega Puyo mode, and of course a Puyo Puyo Fever mode!
Unlike previous entries in the Puyo Puyo franchise, characters will not be portrayed using 2D sprites but rather new 3D models displaying their iconic designs.
Aside from featuring characters from the Puyo Puyo franchise, this game will also include other recognizable Sega icons such as six characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise!
When playing as a Sonic character you’ll even be able to turn on a visual mode that turns the piling Puyos into head icons from the Sonic franchise! There will be other Puyo customization options available as well.
Because Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop will be an online multiplayer game, players will naturally be able to customize their online profiles with their favorite character, various frames, and a badge of their favorite color Puyo!
This announcement of a new Puyo Puyo game comes right off the heels of the current Sega Super Game initiative, which is seeing them develop new games for nearly all of their currently existing IPs.
While Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop is not being given the same spotlight that other titles such as the Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio reboots are receiving, it’s still nice to see a lesser-known Sega franchise receive a new entry.
Unfortunately for a lot of Puyo fans, this title will be exclusive to the Apple Arcade storefront. Similar to other mobile Sega Hardlight titles like Sonic Dream Team due to an exclusivity deal the publisher signed with Apple.
