Video Game publisher and developer Sega took to their English Twitter account on December 13, 2023, with a post that has baffled and confused the Puyo Puyo fandom. The post appeared to be an advertisement for Puyo Puyo Quest, a Puyo Puyo mobile game that has remained Japanese-exclusive for over a decade.

The post’s text appeared to be directly translated from the game’s Japanese app store description and the link in the post led players to the Japanese version of the game. Many wrote the tweet off as a mistake on Sega of America’s part, but over the past day, the story continued to develop with ever more oddities.

The first of which was how the embedded link on the original post displayed the game’s name in English instead of the original Japanese title. Leading to speculation that Sega may actually be working on a localization of the game.

As the day went on, this embedded link continued to show oddities in the form of the app’s icon changing from the original Puyo Puyo Quest icon to a new icon with a previously unused model of Arle, the first protagonist of the Puyo Puyo franchise.

The app icon would continue to change throughout the day, each time displaying a previously unused 3D model of a popular Puyo Puyo character such as the mascot Carbuncle and the second series protagonist Amitie.

The tweets that Sega made that feature these embedded links are currently still viewable now, however, they do not appear when scrolling Sega’s Twitter timeline due to the app suppressing the views of tweets with links to app store platforms.

The truth of why Sega made these tweets about the game remains a mystery, with some fans speculating that a localization of Puyo Puyo Quest is being worked on while others insist that this is a simple mistake.

Those who do believe that a localization is being worked on point to Sega’s current relationship with Apple Arcade as a point in their favor. Sega has been releasing games on the platform for some time now, including the recently released Sonic Dream Team.

For now, though, Puyo Puyo Quest is only available for download in Japanese on Android, IOS, and PC via the DMM Game Store.
