At 12:00 on February 7, 2024, video game publisher Blizzard Entertainment released a trailer for Overwatch 2’s ninth season: Champions. This trailer went over gameplay changes players can expect in the upcoming season.
The trailer begins by showcasing the complete competitive overhaul that will be hitting Overwatch 2 soon. This overhaul will include a rank reset feature and the ability to track your progress each match.
A new high-level rank of Champion will also be added to the game, allowing high-level players to climb the competitive ladder even higher than before.
Season 9’s battle pass will also include new skins for several of the characters focused on the theme of creatures and eldritch horrors like Cthulhu.
Players can also expect new skins to be added to the shop during the ninth season, with several of the ones showcased in the trailer being centered around cherry blossoms.
In addition to all of this, a new Hero Mastery called Gauntlet will be added to the game. This Mastery will see players work together to defend towers from oncoming enemies.
The most interesting reveal in this trailer by far though was the teaser at the end. In a short black-and-white sequence the trailer zooms in on an old jukebox before a familiar, jazzy, tune begins to play.
Any anime fan can immediately identify the song playing as the opening theme of Cowboy Bebop, one of the most popular 90s anime in America. This theme appears to be teasing a Cowboy Bebop collab of some form.
What shape this Cowboy Bebop collab will take is currently unknown. Many are hoping for skins of Spike and Faye, but there is currently not much to speculate on currently. More information is expected to be revealed at a later date.
Overwatch 2 is currently available to download for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series S|X, and on PC via Steam.
