Nintendo’s lawyers have asked Garry’s Mond to remove all Nintendo-related content from the sandbox video game’s Steam Workshop.
The game’s developers, Facepunch Studios, confirmed the surprising news on Steam.
According to the studio, the takedown requests were legitimate, describing it as “fair enough.” But, while it will comply, it’s asking for Nintendo to be as generous as possible with the timeline.
Facepunch is also pleading for fans to do two things: delete Nintendo-related uploads and never upload anything related to Nintendo again.

However, some fans believe that the takedown request isn’t real. They’re going as far as to call out the development team for “falling for it.”
Regardless of the request’s legitimacy, the team behind Garry’s Mod is erring on the side of caution.
Nintendo Lawyers Are On a Takedown Spree

Nintendo is infamous for having an army of lawyers issue takedown notices whenever it sees a potential copyright infringement. But, they’ve been a lot busier than usual in the past two years.
The world’s oldest video game company has had its legal team take care of everything from killing a multiplayer mod for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to filling a multi-million-dollar lawsuit against Yuzu, an emulator for the Nintendo Switch.
What’s surprising about Garry’s Mod case is that it has taken Nintendo nearly 20 years to take action. Thus, many are wondering, why now?
With that said, if you search for “Mario” on the Steam Workshop, you’ll find nearly 200 pages worth of results. This is just one of Nintendo’s many mascots. Can you imagine how much work it would take for Facepunch to sift through all of the Zelda, Pokemon, Mario, and Metroid content, among others just to avoid a lawsuit that could potentially shut the studio down and cost them their jobs?
To no one’s surprise, the Garry’s Mod community isn’t happy. But, it’s not like they can do anything about it.
