Microsoft’s gaming subscription service, Xbox Game Pass, may be receiving a price increase this year according to emails sent out to various Canadian subscribers of the service, notifying them of the price increase.
At the time of writing this article, the current price for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is $11.99 Canadian Dollars per month. According to an email received by the Canadian Twitter user @DrewM987, this price will be increasing to $22.99 per month in September of 2024.
The email reads in full:
“Thank you for being an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate member. We are planning to update our prices to address changing market conditions. This price change allows us to continue to bring you more value and great games for the very best gaming experience. Starting September 12, 2024, you will be charged $22.99 plus applicable taxes every recurrence period unless you cancel up to two days prior to your next scheduled payment date. You can manage your subscription, how you pay, or cancel your subscription by visiting your Microsoft Account here.”
According to many replies to the tweet and a report by the Twitter news source Wario64, several other Game Pass subscribers in the region received identical emails.
It is currently unknown if this price increase will affect all regions of the world immediately or if Microsoft is testing the audience for it in smaller regions of the world such as Canada first.
Regardless of how Microsoft will handle the release of this price increase, many social media users have already begun to express their discontent with even the idea of this price change. As the new price for the service is nearly double what it was before, many are claiming they will be unable to continue paying the subscription once this change is enacted.
Only time will tell what path Microsoft takes with the Game Pass service and if this price change will be a wise move for the company.
Update 7:00 PM, US EST: Microsoft’s website has been updated with a support page details the following changes to Game Pass alongside the price change:
- Price changes will go into effect for new members for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Xbox Game Pass Core, and PC Game Pass.
- Game Pass for Console will no longer be available for new members.
- Members who are already subscribed to Game Pass for Console and have automatic payment renewal enabled will be able to continue to enjoy their membership.
In addition to this, the page also elaborates in detail what the price increases will look like worldwide.
The Xbox Game Pass is currently available to use on Xbox consoles and PC. At the time of this article’s writing the basic package costs $9.99 US dollars a month while an Ultimate subscription costs $16.99 a month.
