On the afternoon of March 8, 2024, computer software company Microsoft made a blog post on their official website confirming fears about cyber attacks and data breachs that occurred in the January of this year.

Back in the January of 2024, Microsoft made an announcement claiming that the Russian state-backed hacking group known as Midnight Blizzard was targeting several Microsoft employees via social engineering attacks to gain information on the company.

On March 8, 2024, Microsoft would further inform the public about these attacks, claiming that in recent weeks they had seen evidence that Midnight Blizzard was using information gained from the company email system to gain unauthorized access and information.

This unauthorized access has allowed Midnight Blizzard to access some of the company’s source code repositories and internal systems never meant to be seen by the public.

The one bright spot of this troublesome mess is that according to Microsoft, no Microsoft-hosted customer-facing storefronts have shown any sign of being accessed by Midnight Blizzard. This means that for now, any personal information you as a customer have on the Microsoft or Xbox store has not been accessed.

While it is speculated that these cyber-attacks against Microsoft are targeted toward getting intel on the company’s military contracts, it is possible that confidential information about Xbox employees and products may be leaked to the public.

In response to these cyber attacks, Microsoft has issued a statement saying that in the future they will improve their security investments to ensure that a situation like this doesn’t happen again.

Microsoft’s full statement about the current Midnight Blizzard cyber attacks and previous statements about the hacking organization can be read on the company’s official blog page.

Microsoft’s investigation into these Midnight Blizzard attacks is still ongoing, with further information likely to be shared by the company in oncoming weeks.
