Kerbal Space Program 2 remains on sale as an Early Access title on Steam, despite the studio behind it, Intercept Games, shutting down permanently tomorrow. This news comes after Take-Two Interactive, the game’s publisher, laid off the entire development team two months ago.

The closure of Intercept Games was announced through a required Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) message, but Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has made contradictory statements about the studio’s status.

False Advertising on Store Page

While Kerbal Space Program 2 remains available for purchase, its status as an “Early Access” title with a development roadmap seems misleading. The roadmap promises features like colonies, interstellar travel, and multiplayer, none of which are currently being worked on.

This raises concerns about false advertising. Steam’s Early Access policy allows for unfinished games to be sold, but it also requires transparency from developers.

Steam’s Responsibility

According to Steam’s own guidelines, when an Early Access game’s development ceases, the title should be removed from the store or have its Early Access label revoked.

In this case, Kerbal Space Program 2 seems to fall under this category. Steam has yet to comment on the situation.

Consumers who purchased the game in the belief that it would receive further development may be entitled to refunds, although Steam’s standard Early Access policy makes this a grey area.

Adding Fuel to the Fire: New Launch on Humble Store

Adding another layer of confusion, Kerbal Space Program 2 just launched on the Humble Store. It’s even appearing prominently in the “new on Humble” section on the front page. Perhaps Take-Two has secured another developer to continue development, but hasn’t publicly announced it yet.

More likely, this launch could be a simple oversight. With the studio closure, someone might have forgotten to cancel pre-existing plans with other storefronts.

The most concerning possibility is that Take-Two might simply remove the Early Access label, declare it version 1.0, and continue selling the unfinished game to unsuspecting customers.

Uncertain Future for Kerbal Space Program 2

The future of Kerbal Space Program 2 is uncertain. With no development team, it’s unclear if the promised features will ever be implemented. Steam’s inaction regarding the misleading store page adds to the confusion surrounding the title.
