It’s become clearer now where Sony is drawing the line with its PlayStation Network requirement on PC. Not long after the Helldivers 2 community bullied Sony into agreeing to drop the game’s hard PSN requirement, it’s poking the bear again with Ghost of Tsushima.

Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’s CUT is coming out on Steam and Epic Games Store on May 16. However, it won’t be available to everyone.

As pointed out by SteamDB, Sony released updated purchase restrictions for Helldivers 2 and Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’s CUT. This means that countries without PSN will be unable to enjoy these PlayStation exclusives unless they take a risk by using a VPN.

The worst part is this decision comes after Sucker Punch Productions clarified that a PSN account is only necessary to play the game’s online multiplayer mode, Legends. With this restriction, this means that while Ghost of Tsushima on PC won’t require users to link their Steam and PSN accounts, those who don’t have access to a PSN account won’t be able to enjoy one of the best PlayStation exclusives of all time on PC.

Despite launching in November 2006, PSN still isn’t available in over 120 countries, which is more than half the world’s population. It’s a glaring issue that Sony should’ve rectified long ago.

Is Ghost of Tsushima 2 In Development?

Sucker Punch and Sony have yet to officially confirm a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. However, this is all but certain at this point.

Ghost of Tsushima was one of the best-selling and highest-rated games on PlayStation 4 when it came out in 2020. The DIRECTOR’s CUT edition for the PlayStation 5 was equally successful.

As of July 2022, Ghost of Tsushima has enjoyed a lifetime sales figure of 9.73 million units – a figure that looks even better considering its relatively meager $60 million budget.

With the situation surrounding the liking of PSN and Steam accounts still unresolved, it remains to be seen if this will affect all future upcoming PlayStation exclusives on PC or if it will become retroactive and include the ones that have already been released.

Then again, Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’s CUT and Helldivers 2 have multiplayer components. This might explain why Sony prefers to delist them from Steam in countries without PSN.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how the PlayStation community will react to this.
