I have reviewed high-end controllers and peripherals that are outstanding in design and function. Granted, you may have to pay significantly more for those features and quality, but when you find that perfect controller you desire, work toward, save for, and purchase, remember that sometimes an expensive item doesn’t guarantee quality.
What if there was an option that offers features usually found in high-end controllers yet doesn’t break the bank? GameSir has released the latest offering in the Nova line of controllers, the Super Nova. You will be amazed at what this controller offers for only $49.99 (plus taxes).
What’s in the box:
- Super Nova Controller
- Charging Dock
- USB-A 2.4g Mini Dongle
- USB Charging Cable
- Instruction Manual
- Support Contact Card
- Sticker Sheet
The New Mid-Range Budget King
When I opened the box, I was impressed by the quality of the controller. The Midnight Blue color was striking for a controller in this range. It certainly has the looks (although I discovered you have more options to change it; more on that later). But what about functionality? It’s pretty impressive.

One potential issue with controllers in these price ranges is the absence of Hall effect sticks and triggers. I’m pleased to report that this model features both, providing excellent analog inputs for the Super Nova. The triggers offer a two-stage input. By flipping a switch, you can enjoy a short trigger travel, ideal for action games and first-person shooters, or a more extended trigger travel suitable for racing games or titles requiring precise analog control.
Recently, I’ve become a fan of mechanical buttons, while others prefer membrane-style ones. They will be pleased that the Super Nova features a membrane D-Pad and ABXY buttons. These buttons are entirely silent and provide a tactile feel when pressed. The device has also demonstrated good responsiveness across various game genres.

Regarding the ABXY buttons, you can remove the faceplate and swap the buttons to change to the Nintendo Switch-style BAYX layout. After that, you can switch the controller’s setup from Xbox to Switch mode. That’s quite nifty!

The button layout for this controller appears as follows:
- ABXY Swappable Buttons
- “+” Button
- “-“ Button
- Home Button
- Screenshot Button
- D-Pad Button
- Mode Button
- Left and Right Bumper Buttons
- Left and Right Triggers
- Left and Right Programmable Back Buttons

The buttons are mappable, and you can create macros using the GameSir Connect app for PC. This app also allows you to change the RGB light display, check the trigger dead zone, and update the firmware.
Another noteworthy feature is the 1000Hz polling rate. The polling rate refers to the speed at which the controller communicates with the device. A higher polling rate generally enhances performance. This rate is excellent for casual players, while more professional players might prefer something of a higher caliber.
I previously mentioned the functionality of the RGB LED lights surrounding the Super Nova’s faceplate, which allow you to customize the colors to your liking. They look fantastic, especially in rainbow mode. Moreover, the included base synchronizes with the Super Nova’s color settings to create a stunning light display.

GameSir appears to love customization options. They provide a variety of faceplates for the Super Nova. Priced at $9.99 each, you can alter the appearance of your Super Nova to any color you like. My favorite is the Dark Gray one; it looks fantastic!

Connectivity
The GameSir Super Nova can handle many devices wirelessly with a 2.4g dongle or Bluetooth and a wired connection with a USB cable. You can connect this controller with the following devices:
- PC
- Nintendo Switch
- iOS
- Android
- Steam Deck
Drawbacks
After playing with the Super Nova, I can confidently say it’s a solid controller for $49.99. My only regret is that I wish it featured removable joysticks. I understand it’s just a nitpick, but this addition could have elevated the customization factor another notch.

Conclusion
I can say I’m pleased with the GameSir Super Nova. It’s the new king of mid-range controllers, boasting Hall effect analog inputs, a high level of customization, and attractive designs. It’s also quite enjoyable to play with. While it may not be ideal for competition, its features provide many desirable qualities for casual players.
