An announcement this time at G-CON 2024 in South Korea has firmly established that the third chapter of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will enter full-scale development ahead of its release before 2025.
With the plot and overall concept finalized, the game has officially entered active development.
A Development Milestone Achieved
During a panel at G-CON 2024 in South Korea, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that the third game’s pre-production phase is complete. Square Enix has mapped out the plot and locked in its overall concept, allowing the team to proceed into full-scale development.
This announcement follows the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth earlier this year, which, despite critical acclaim and high ratings, fell short of Square Enix’s sales expectations. However, the company is undeterred, pressing forward with its ambitious plans for the trilogy’s conclusion.
Freedom with the Highwind

One of the most exciting revelations centers on the Highwind, an iconic airship beloved by fans of the original Final Fantasy 7. Naoki Hamaguchi, told us that the Highwind will not just be a fast-travel system. You can drive and ride in airships instead.
In addition, players will experience a higher perspective of the game’s extensive map when they strive out onto innumerable stratospheric heights. This carries over to our previous interview with Kitase when he said that its overarching importance in the plot would encourage players to try this design concept.
The team took up the challenge to make an ebitable, fully controllable airship. “We will provide players with the airship system they deserve,” said Hamaguchi, reassuring fans that this airship will undeniably offer an amazing experience.
The Impact of This Decision on the Game

This is an indication that Square Enix is throwing everything into a large and varied world for players to explore. With the Highwind, players can fly around wherever they want. The game designers want to make it feel more adventurous and also give a nod towards how it was in your living room back then—free from any kind of control!
The move not to limit the Highwind’s operation bucks some recent trends of the gaming industry, wherein fast-travel systems erase open exploration. Such an approach is likely to appeal the series’ fans, who treasure and wish to see more make-it-up-as-we-go deformation of their special model universe.
A quicker development time for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3?
Unlike Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which took about five years to make, its first sequel was completed in just four partly thanks to recycling constructive elements. With even more resources available for the upcoming third episode, efficiency will probably be significantly better this time round.
At present however Square Enix has not yet made an official announcement on when work will begin.
The Road Ahead for Square Enix
As the last entry in the series, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 has got a lot to live up to. The project aims to provide an impactful story for players and achieve positive change in general game design that everybody can follow. Its ready promise of free exploration means that this trilogy is set up very nicely indeed on all counts.
In the coming months, there will be further updates as Square Enix continues to craft the world it envisions for this game. Whether you’re excited by the Highwind’s freedom, the ever-developing plot, or just its immersive world, one thing is certain: Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 looks to be heading for new heights.
Stay tuned for more developments as Square Enix continues to unwrap this long-anticipated release.
