When booting up the newest Sword Art Online video game, Echoes of Aincrad, players may immediately become confused as instead of creating their own character they’ll have to play through the tutorial as a completely generic character. Those familiar with the plot of Sword Art Online will know exactly why this is the case, but as the player goes through the opening hours of the game you may start to grow impatient and begin to wonder when Akihiko Kayaba will enact his scheme and allow your character to actually look how you want them to. If that describes you, here is a brief explanation on how long it takes to unlock character creation in Echoes of Aincrad.
When Does Character Creation Unlock in Echoes of Aincrad
You won’t be able to create your own character in Echoes of Aincrad until you complete the final prologue quest, Violet Fencer II. Reaching this quest will take quite a while as the game will teach you about exploration, boss fights, party members, and dungeons before the quest even begins. This game has quite a lengthy tutorial so prepare to have at least a single play session entirely as the default character.
How long it takes to reach this point? While the answer to that will depend on the individual player, I myself reached this point about four hours into my playthrough of the game. Unfortunately, just because you created a character doesn’t mean you’ll get to play as them yet.
Before you can play as the custom character you created, you’ll need to complete one more questline. On the first day of Sword Art Online’s launch you’ll play through the quest Summons. This will take you about another half an hour to complete as you’ll need to travel from the spawn point to the Town of Beginnings. Once you’re finally in town, the plot of the original light novel will finally begin and you’ll be able to play through the rest of your game as your custom character!
