If you’re like me, you probably hate seeing your character wearing mismatched clothes. Well, with the help of a little dye job here and there, you can make set pieces that have nothing to with each other fit perfectly well. Just look at my pirate in the image above! However, it is kinda limiting to only be able to use one color and it’s lighter and stronger variants, isn’t it? That’s why I’ve scoured the map, talking to shopkeepers and looking in people’s homes to find all of the dyes locations and recipes in Crimson Desert to allow you and me to get the coolest looking fit the game has to offer.
Disclaimer: This is a work in progress. Any other locations you may find would be helpful in completing this guide!
How to Unlock Dyes
There’s three ways to get dyes in Crimson Desert:
- Buy them from a merchant
- Steal them
- Craft them
The most obvious one is to just find shopkeepers, usually the Dyehouses themselves, which sell the dyes.
You can also find the dyes in people’s homes and you can steal them. I recommend getting the Great Thief’s Gloves (House Serkis Secret of the Lost Seal faction quest reward) which allow you to steal something every 30 real-life minutes with no repercussion.
The last way, which is the hardest by far, is to craft the dye yourself at a Cauldron. You can find one early game at the Witch’s Lair north of Hernand Castle (exact map location below at the Bright Yellow Dye). However, the ingredients you will need to craft these are… hard to come by.
Once you use a dye that’s in your inventory you will be able to use all those 20 hues of color at any time at the Dyehouses. The only special requirement is that each Dyehouse can only use dyes from its region. So the red ones from Hernand can only be used by the Dyehouse in Hernand.
The first row of 10 hues are dyes that aren’t craftable.
You’ll also get a Dyehouse in your camp (Oliver) after advancing the Greymane recruitment quest and you’ll be able to use all dye types there if you’ve at least talked to the Dyehouse from the region who’s dye you want to use.
Since that’s the requirement to actually use them in camp, I’ll start all of the region dyes with their trader, so you know how to talk to right away.
Just a heads up, to get the recruitment quest (Rumor at Inksworth Bindery) you’ll need to complete the third camp expansion. To do that, you’ll first need to complete all, and I mean all (even the one where you need to grow an apple tree) Gathered Will – Grounds of the Sunrise Greymane faction quests.
How to Unlock Materials
You unlock one new material each time you press the Dye option while talking at a newly discovered Dyehouse. You can access all of the unlocked materials at your camp’s dyer.
If you only care about materials, then look at the first dye color for each of the regions, as those are the locations of the dyehouses.
All Hernandian Dyes (Red + Pure White)

All Hernandian Dyes use Pink Medicinal Herbs which are one of these flowers: Peony, Pink Rosemary, or Begonia.
Dark Red Dye

The first place you can get a dye and actually use it is the Dyehouse southeast of Hernand Castle. You can buy the Dark Red Dye from the vendor, Theoric, selling it here for 1.5 silver and you’ll gain access to 20 hues of dark red.
You can also craft the Dark Red dye using:
- Pink Medicinal Herb x10 + Rhinoceros Beetle x3 + Longhorn Beetle x1 + Stag Beetle x2
Pure White Dye

You can buy this one for 15 silver from a Provisioner’s Shop in Timberton, Delesyia. However, this shop does not exist unless you complete a quest chain first.
In this Timberton, you’ll find its mayor, ready to give you a quest to fix a drilling rig. The quest text is bugged and you’ll see “Tinkerton” all over the place, but the Blackwater Oil Merchant Guild faction quests are all about Timberton.

Go to the drilling rig to the east, get rid of the enemies, follow the pretty clear instructions on how to get the drill going, and come back to finish the quest. You’ll notice in the northern part of Timberton that a question mark will appear. Go away or sleep and a merchant will appear with the Pure White Dye.
This dye cannot be crafted.
Bright Red Dye

You can steal the Bright Red Dye from the 2nd floor of the Oakenshield Manor. It’s standing on a cabinet next to a map in the study.
You can also craft the Bright Red Dye (which is something you’re forced to do during the Brightening Spirits Greymane Faction Quest) using:
- Pink Medicinal Herb x10 + Rhinoceros Beetle x3 + Longhorn Beetle x3
Rich Red Dye

There’s a house at the Nas River Fishing Dock that you can enter using a key and you can buy the dye from the table next to the beds.
You can also buy it from the counter at the Witch’s House in The Witchwood, which you unlock during Chapter 5.

If you like your money, you can steal this one from the top of Torchligh Beacon, right from behind the beacon, next to a fire brazier.
If you have the patience, you can also just wait, since you’ll receive this dye when recruiting Oliver back into the camp.
You can also craft the Rich Red Dye using:
- Pink Medicinal Herb x10 + Rhinoceros Beetle x3 + Longhorn Beetle x2 + Stag Beetle x1
Red Dye

You can pick it up in the Mudridge Cabin southeast of Goldleaf Guildhouse. It’s on the highest floor of the wooden building with a chest at the bottom, on a table, next to a map on the wall.

You can also steal it (don’t know why it’s steal, but sure) from the Twin Clover Cabins east of The Witchwoods. It’s on a table inside the house to the west.
Craft it using:
- Pink Medicinal Herb x10 + Rhinoceros Beetle x3 + Longhorn Beetle x1 + Stag Beetle x1
Deep Red Dye

Steal from inside a house with blue flowers decorating the outside in Sunset Valley, southernmost point in Hernand, right between the puddle and river. You’ll need a key to get inside. The Dye is right next to the person sitting on the bench next to the door.

You can buy this one from Devin in the Pororin Village after completing the quest to gain access. You will also gain access to Pororin Dyes at your camp after talking to him.
Craft the Yellow Dye using:
- Yellow Medicinal Herb x10 + Beetle x3 + Longhorn Beetle x1 + Stag Beetle x1
Bright Yellow Dye

You can buy/steal this dye from Shadow’s Whisper Cave, where you can find both your first Cauldron and Witch.

If you don’t want to buy/steal it, you can pick it up southwest of the Pororin Village by climbing to the top of the Reachwood Ruins. It’s on top of a crate there, alongside some arrows.
Craft it using:
- Yellow Medicinal Herb x10 + Beetle x3 + Longhorn Beetle x3
Rich Yellow Dye

Craft the Bright Green Dye using:
- Materials: Yellow Medicinal Herb x5 + Beetle x5 + Longhorn Beetle x3
Rich Green Dye

Steal from the main tent with the red roof in Calphade Gate, south of Calphade Castle.
Just a heads up, it’s impossible to steal without getting caught if you don’t use the thief gloves. At least you’ll get the animation that you’re imprisoned, pay a small fine, and keep the dye.

There’s a second steal location a bit to the north at Calphade Outpost, next to the river. It’s inside the first tent on the right as you enter the camp, on a lower level of a night stand.
Crafting recipe:
- Yellow Medicinal Herb x5 + Beetle x5 + Longhorn Beetle x2 + Stag Beetle x1

You can pick this up (or steal it, if you liberated the location…) from Vat’nhol Fortress, in the western part of Pailune, right next to the Upper Nas River writing on the map. After beating the White Bear boss, climb up to the right to an outside munitions room. The dye is on a crate to the right.
Crafting recipe:
- Yellow Medicinal Herb x5 + Beetle x5 + Longhorn Beetle x1 + Stag Beetle x2
Deep Green Dye

Steal from the lord’s room in Calphade Castle. You can find this by climbing to the top of the castle (the large roof, not the smaller tower that’s a floor higher) and going down a ladder. Go into the next room and through the double doors south to reach a large royal bedroom. The Deep Green Dye is on a nightstand next to a couple of drawers on the right, in front of the bed.
I suggest stealing using the thief gloves since there’s a lot of people here. I personally just took it and didn’t move, and for some reason none of the women there saw me.
Crafting recipe:
- Yellow Medicinal Herb x5 + Beetle x5 + Stag Beetle x3
All Demenissian Dyes (Blue + Purple + Violet + Bright Grey)

Crafting recipe:
- Blue Lavender x15 + Lavender x5 + Longhorn Beetle x2 + Stag Beetle x1

Purple Dyes
Rich Purple Dye

There’s three dyehouses in Demeniss. The new ones appear after finishing the Chapter 8 main quests. The purple one, run by Edmar, is northeast of the city. You can also buy the Purple one from inside his house, more details on that below.

Violet Dyes
Bright Violet Dye

You can buy this one from the 3rd dyehouse in Demeniss that spawns northwest of the city, above the Greenfield Farm, after you complete Chapter 8.

You can also steal this one from the second floor of Stellen Manor, west of Beighen, at the border between Pailune and Demeniss. Enter using a key or through a window. The dye is sitting on a cupboard next to the staircase.
Improvise craft using:
- Pink Medicinal Herb x10 + Lavender x10 + Longhorn Beetle x3
Bright Grey Dye

To get this one, you’ll need to first clear the Saltroad Camp of enemies, located in the middle of the Crimson Desert, north of Tommaso. Then complete the Principles of the Saltroad Merchants quest, fast travel back, and a Back Alley Shop will spawn. Buy the Bright Grey Dye from Solan for 33 silver.
This dye cannot be crafted.
Rich Violet Dye

Pick this up from the little shed attached to the side of the Creaky Fishing Dock right on the Denn River, north of Demeniss, east of the Spire of Soaring. It’s sitting on a crate, can be easily missed if you don’t know it’s supposed to be there.
Improvise craft using:
- Pink Medicinal Herb x10 + Lavender x10 + Longhorn Beetle x2 + Stag Beetle x1
Violet Dye

You can steal this one from inside St. Halssius’s House of Healing. It right inside of the main big cathedral. Go inside through the main entrance and, at the end, on the right, you’ll find the Violet Dye inside a cell, next to the bed. This dye cannot be crafted.

Cauldron improvise recipe:

Rich Sky Blue Dye

Steal it from inside a warehouse in Port Delesyia, right next to the Royal Trading Post. The dye is sitting on a shelf at the end of the room.

You can also steal it from an abandoned cabin in the middle of nowhere called Woodrock Cabin, west of Dewhaven Keep, right above the E from Dewhaven on the map. Don’t know why this one is “stolen” since no one is there, but you can safely steal it without being seen.
Cauldron improvise recipe:

Sky Blue Dye

Craft the Rich Spring Green using:
- White Medicinal Herb x10 + Beetle x3 + Longhorn Beetle x2 + Stag Beetle x1
Black Dye

You can buy this one from a Back Alley Shop that spawns in Muiquun, southeast of Tommaso, for 37.5 silver. To actually get this merchant to appear you’ll first need to head over to this village and liberate it from the enemies here. You’ll then report your deed in Tommaso to a guard and NPCs will spawn in the market.
A eavesdropping quest called Lawless Market will appear in the southern part of the village. Go behind the red wall and press to listen in when prompted to lean on the wall and listen to them. You’ll gain a quest to steal some wagons.

The quest is a bit annoying and buggy. You can’t use the “smaller” wagons, at least for the first wagon you sell. It needs to be one of the big ones that are pulled by two horses. There’s a great spot where a lot of wagons spawn to the southwest, at Desert Freesword Camp. The purple route I highlighted above has a bunch of wagons riding around.
The icon that shows where the camp is also shows you the exact location of a small wagon you can use for the second part of the quest that just sits there at all times. If you don’t want to look around for ones riding around, you can get this one quickly.

Once the Muiquun’s Black Market quest chain is done (you don’t talk to the fence again or anything, the quest just ends after the 3rd wagon is sold), the merchant will spawn. If the question mark is there, but he isn’t, rest at the bonfire for whatever amount of time you want to make him appear.
This dye cannot be crafted.
Bright Spring Green

Steal from the Royal Trading Post in Varnia. It’s at the counter, standing next to some vases.
Cauldron improvise recipe:
- White Medicinal Herb x10 + Beetle x3 + Longhorn Beetle x3

I found it in a camp in the middle of the Trader’s Expanse in Crimson Desert. There’s a Hearth right next to the Desert Lake Gold Mine that you should discover once you learn of all the Gold locations on the map.

You can also buy/steal it from a shelf in the Tavern in Varnia, right next to the stairs going to the 2nd floor. It’s positioned in a weird angle and I had to buy the Water behind it to actually be able to purchase it.
To craft it you can use:
- White Medicinal Herb x10 + Beetle x3 + Longhorn Beetle x1 + Stag Beetle x1
Dark Spring Green Dye

Steal from inside a room on the terrace overlooking the waterfall in Varnia, right at the entrance into the town, south of the Saddlery. It’s on a high table past the tea table.
Cauldron improvise recipe:

Craft the Teal Dye using:
- Blue Lavender x10 + Shrubby Sophora x10 + Longhorn Beetle x1 + Stag Beetle x1

You’ll get this one as a reward for finishing the Brightening the Spirits Scattered Embers quest for the Greymanes, where you’ll also learn how to craft dyes. The quest will appear after you finish the quest in camp where you need to recruit a dog in town and then the one where you sell off a stolen wagon.
This dye cannot be crafted.
