Not every Side Story in the Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake requires running around the entire village for several chapters as you photograph a bunch of ghosts. One Side Story, Children at Play, actually only takes a few minutes to complete. However it is also the easiest substory to miss as you have to go out of your way to find the first journal in this quest chain. If you have missed this journal or are simply trying to find out how to grab that extra glowing item in the Osaka House, then please read this walkthrough for the Children at Play Side Story in the Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly remake.
Children at Play Side Story Walkthrough
I am actually unsure when this Side Story first unlocks as I didn’t discover it until the final chapter of the game. To activate the Side Story, make your way to field by the village storehouse and search for a small hut in the bottom right of the area. Inside of it you will find a journal as well as a photo of Osaka House.
Make your way to the second floor of Osaka House and equip the Exposure Lens of your camera. You’ll then be able to find a small crawlspace by the staircase and use it to get to the balcony of the home, an area that was unreachable in the original game.
Use the newly accessible balcony to reach the other side of the Osaka House’s second floor (though oddly enough the game refers to this as the storage room). Here tou will have to fight against one of the children whom you played hide and seek with earlier in the game. Because it’s only one ghost you shouldn’t have any issue with this fight.
Next, we’ll need to head to the Kurosawa House to search for the second child. He will be playing around in the Altar Room, directly saying hello to you when you enter the arra. Take a quick snapshot of him and pick up the journal he leaves behind to continue the Side Story.
The finish off the quest we’ll need to head to Eikado Temple in the top right of the village. When you reach the back of the temple, specters of all three children will appear and beckon you to play Hide and Seek with them again. Each of them will be hiding in a different part of the temple, you’ll need to use your Exposure Lens to see them like before, and every time you take a picture of one of them you will be forced into a fight. The children can be found in the following locations
- Behind a screen by the temple entrance
- Hiding in the grass behind the temple
- Next to the door in the Enshrinement Hall
Defeating the last child will earn the player a new journal and complete the quest, but you aren’t done with the children of the village yet. The moment you exit the temple another specter will appear and you will begin Azami Kiryu’s Side Story.
