Akane and Azami Kiryu were featured in both key and box art for the original version of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterly despite these two twins only having a tiny role in the game. While the Fatal Frame 2 Remake doesn’t give them a major role in the plot, the player will be able to spend a bit more time with Akane’s ghost via her Side Story which spans several chapters of the game. However, this Side Story can be easily missed if the player doesn’t backtrack to a specific room in the game. Akane Kiryu Side Story Walkthrough
After completing the Tachibana House section of the game and reuniting with Mayu, make your way back to the Projector Room in the Kiryu House and equip the Exposure Lens on your camera. Take a picture of the projector and you’ll spot a Remnant of Akane, pick up the journal that appears after she vanishes and this Side Story will begin.
Next, head on over to the Twins’ Room in the Kiryu House, in the middle of the room there will be another Remnant that you must take a picture of with your Exposure Lense. Once you do, a Specter of Akane will briefly appear so be ready to take a picture of her.
There will be another journal left behind where the Remnant was, read it and you’ll be forced into a fight against the Dollmaker ghost from the previous chapter of the game. After you beat him, you won’t be able to progress the Side Story for a while as the next step doesn’t occur until the final chapter of the game.
Once you reach the final chapter of the game and are separated from Mayu, make your way back to the Kiryu House and go to the Dollmaker’s room. Here you will find specters of Akane, the doll, and the Dollmaker. After taking their photo and picking up the journal in the middle of the room, Akane will appear to fight you one last time.
After defeating Akane, you will obtain a photo of a grave in Minakami Cemetary. While this grave will offer no extra items, journals, or specter encounters for now, it will be a mandatory part of Azami Kiryu’s Side Story later.
